Cortés' new show is called "Soul" - aligning the Gypsy element
with black music - and it seems to be working for this production who's coreography
is being taken all over the world, drawing from American cultures along with other
multidirectional influences. Even more far out is this Cordaba based performer's
concept of dance. In life there is a moment for everything and for Cortes the
moment has arrived for dramatization and "Guaguancó". Man and
woman. The old and the new, here and there, gospel and Flamenco, Flamenco Tap,
a costume of lights, bata de cola.
The
band, modified for the new show, continues to be heavy on percussion in the instrumental
section and aged style in the vocal section. Some jewels remain from before (Ana
Reyes, Bandolero, Juan Parrilla, Ramón Porrina, Alicia Fernández...)
along with new additions that offer no less than a high level of musical virtuosity.
"Soul",
the third production by Cortés, is a process of osmosis in which the elasticity
of the Flamenco aesthetic is the base. The grandiose dancer, in fusion and in
company, exhibits an agile series of Martinete, Tangos, Tarantos and Seguiriya;
Bulerias, Bolero and Guaguancó. Dances from here to there, clad in the
colors of mestizo, black and white; Flamenco and mestizo topped off with a New
York geometric architecture.
