SONGHAI is the name of an small African kingdom invaded by the Spaniards troops
some centuries ago.
SONGHAI
is the name of Ketama´s third record, acclaimed by the British press as the best
“ethnic record “ of the year in 1988.
In 1988 Joe Boyd, producer of Pink Floyd, REM, and The mystery of the Bulgarian
voices, organized this project, a musical meeting among Toumani Diabate, Danny
Thompson and Ketama.

Musicians
- Toumani
Diabate from Bamako (Mali), plays the Kora, an african harp of
21 strings.
His father, Sidiki, was the first to use this instrument as a soloist. Toumani
has also contributed to its evolution developing new techniques to improvise melodies
while playing an accompaniment and introducing the “kora” into new musical contexts
in his experiences with flamenco and jazz musicians. He is also sings in this
record showing his magnificent vocal faculties

Miguel Carmona: Guitar
Antonio and José Miguel Carmona (sons of Pepe Habichuela) and Juan Carmona
(son of Juan Habichuela) are Ketama, the leader band of new flamenco, a group
of young spanish flamenco musicians influenced by jazz, pop and latin music.
- Danny
Thompson: double bass. United Kingdom.
A pioneer in the fusion of jazz, folk, and rock, he worked with the bluesman Alexis
Korner, the jazz trumpeter Freddy Hubbard and formed the group Pentangle. This
great musician has played as a session player with Eric Clapton, Allan Holdsworth,
John Mclaughlin, Elvis Costello, Sonny Rollins, Tim Buckley and many others.
