Six years after the successful edition of SONGHAI 1, Africa meets flamenco again
with new guests, as a bigger team.
Produced by Joe Boyd, Lucy Durán and Mario Pacheco, it was recorded in
Madrid and London. This time the cd includes written commentaries to the music
and the lyrics of the songs.
The collaboration between Toumani Diabate and Ketama has increased their understanding
of both worlds. The brilliance of the playing of all the musicians makes of this
record an indispensable piece for every music collector.
New guests:
-
José Soto: flamenco singer and founder member of Ketama,
he left the band after the recording of their first record to start working in
his solo career.
-
Keletegui Diabate: one of the more recognized Malian musicians, he is a multi-instrumentist
(violin, trombone, guitar and balafon) with a long live experience
in the bands of musicians like Salif Keita. He plays the balafon in this record,
this was his first instrument, a predecessor of the modern xylophone.
-
Kassemady: singer, is one of the most known singers in Mali.
He is actually living in Paris and performing with his own band.
- Javier
Colina: double bass, Spain.
Colina is one of the few modern jazz musicians that can play flamenco music with
that unique and warm sound. He can be also heard playing with “la Barbería
del Sur”.
- Basekou
Kouyate: ngoni.
The ngoni is a small five string lute, an instrument similar to the american banjo.
- Aurora:
backing vocals, Spain.
She started singing as a child with his father’s group. Aurora became very popular
in the seventies with her peculiar flamenco-rumba style.

Parrilla: violin.
He is now a member of Joaquín Cortés’ group.

-
Joselín Vargas: rumberas.
