Antonio Chacón

Don Antonio Chacón
Singer 1869-1929. Born in Jerez de la frontera (Cádiz)

Song: Murcianas

This is the title as it appears on the original record label from 1928, but as it is the name of the style, not the song’s name, the current flamenco terminology considers that this song belongs to the "palo"(style) called "malagueñas".

Record: "1913-1917: La cumbre de un maestro" (A master’s crowing achievement).

Composer: popular

This is a fragment of one of the 24 songs compiled on the cd including recordings from 1913 to 1927. Antonio Chacón, a singer respected and praised by every flamenco artist, didn’t like to record his performances and he did it only when he needed the money. The technology was very far from being perfect and the singer always said that the quality used to be very poor and the similitude between his live music and the recorded were "just pure coincidence". His first recordings are imperfect and very damaged or are lost, while the latest ones show him with his vocal faculties prematury lessened by his precarious health.

Don Antonio Chacón was called "God", "Master", "Monster", "Genius"...Why?, because he could sing any style and his voice was unbelievable, he was a deep researcher of the "cante", and his gentle, but strong personality, next to his very modest upbringing made him become a legend.

Lyrics:
Ay, a qué tanto me consientes
si tú no me has de querer,
ay, a que tanto me consientes,
mátame ya de una vez,
porque yo te perdono la muerte,
ay, que ya no quiero padecer.

Why do you consent me so much..?
If you are not going to love me,
Why do you consent me so much..?
Kill me once and for all
I will forgive you for doing it,
because I don’t want to suffer anymore.
