Flamenco-world.com Top 10 of 2005 |
Although the video production of flamenco
hasn't yet reached the levels it should have, several titles
have quenched the public's thirst for flamenco viewing material.
The bestselling archive recording was a live set by Sabicas
from the sixties available on ‘King
of the flamenco guitar’. The most popular live set
from flamenco's new wave was ‘Girando
Barí’ by Ojos de Brujo, on the back of the
commercial success of their second album - a true demonstration
that there are alternative and independent ways of breaking
into the recording industry. After several years away from
the shelves, Dominique Abel's documentary ‘Agujetas.
Cantaor’ finally made the break from VHS to DVD.
And judging by its third place in the charts, it was an eagerly-awaited
product. There were also two musical documentaries that had
only been seen on TV and in the cinema. On the one hand, ‘Bodas
de Gloria’, starring Farruco and all his descendents.
And, on the other hand, a tender look at the professional
and personal relationship between Pedro and his sister Inés
Bacán, with an added concert.

Sabicas on DVD ‘King
of the flamenco guitar’
The DVDs in constant demand from the thousands of flamenco
students around the globe are the instructional materials.
In the latter part of 2005 the second installment of the collection
of dance classes ‘El
baile flamenco’ was released, this time in eleven
volumes for Advanced level and with Lalo Tejada as a teacher.
Whilst it isn't new, Óscar Herrero's step-by-step series
for guitar students ‘Guitarra
flamenca paso a paso’ maintained healthy sales figures,
with a new release in the shape of ‘Guitarra flamenca.
Bulerías paso a paso’ by José Manuel Montoya.
The ‘Cante flamenco paso a paso’ vocal classes
on DVD didn't reach the sales charts, but they did awaken
a certain curiosity from fans . And Guillermo McGill's ‘Aprende
a tocar el cajón flamenco’ continues to be of
help to those interested in percussion.
With a lack of new shows on DVD, titles such as ‘Mariana
Pineda’ by Sara Baras, ‘Live at the Royal
Albert Hall’ by Joaquín Cortés and ‘Francisco
Sánchez-Paco de Lucía’ are still in the
list. Evidence that the spectator doesn't make do with the
experience of the theater, if flamenco actually reaches a
theater in their city. In the case of flamenco-lovers that
live in places with limited access to live flamenco, the DVD
is their only option.

Flamenco-world.com bestsellers for 2005 |
Instructional guitar books - both musical scores and study
methods - are always of interest to lovers of the guitar.
Outstanding in the sales list for 2005 are the musical scores
of ‘Fuente
y Caudal’ by Paco de Lucía, transcribed by
Cañizares, third instalment of the official collection
of Paco de Lucía's work. As for the study books, the
first place is taken by Manuel Granados's
‘Método elemental de guitarra flamenca’,
highly recommended for students, as are the other titles by
this teacher.
Antonio Gades |
|
Although it's a book that was first published in 2003, ‘Guía
del flamenco de Andalucía’ has sold well
following its recent reissue. The demand for basic information
on flamenco is also reflected in the sales of ‘Una
historia del flamenco’ by José Manuel Gamboa,
an intense volume that draws together all the information
available to-date on the history of this artform. The tribute
to Antonio Gades immortalized in the de luxe book of photos
‘Gades’
was a hit with fans of baile and photography. Although there
aren't so many titles to choose from, and interest in reading
about flamenco isn't growing either.
