Belén Maya.
Rara avis
She could appear in the ‘lineage’ section for
being the daughter of Mario Maya and Carmen Mora. Also in
that of the ‘new Sevillian school’ for having
drawn on that classic source. She fits in the tablaos section,
since she made her début at Zambra, Café de
Chinitas and Corral de la Pacheca. Moreover, she has leapt
from the dance corps of ballets such as the Andalusian Dance
Company, Mario Maya Company and Carmen Cortés Company,
to her solo career. Belén Maya is capable of dancing
classic cantiñas dressed in a bata de cola to Mayte
Martín's cante and dancing with one shoe missing to
the sound of non-flamenco music in ‘Fuera de los límites’
(‘Beyond the Limits’). The artistic capacity of
this bailaora born in New York is impressive, as can be appreciated
in the film ‘Flamenco’ by Carlos Saura. Rara avis.
