Estrella Morente announces a show geared to "freedom"
to close out Seville's Bienal 2002
Arcángel
opens the Second Feria Mundial del Flamenco with 'Desde la tierra'

Estrella Morente and Arcángel are the center of attention at Seville's
Twelfth Bienal de Flamenco. While the singer from Granada bears the responsibility
of putting the crowning touch on the festival on October 6th, 2002 in the Auditorio
de Sevilla, the young man from Huelva has been assigned the task of opening the
Second Fería Mundial del Flamenco three days earlier in the Palenque. Traditional
cante, exotic instruments, lyrical choruses...these are the ingredients that these
two new voices of cante flamenco promise to deliver.

Estrella Morente, appearing in the Bienal for the first time, rejected the
title for the closing, 'Mestizaje', and has chosen to play it by ear: "Although
'mestizaje' or cultural mixing is always a part of what we do, I put that title
aside, and my show is going to be called 'freedom', or something like that".
The singer, who is proud to share the bill with her father, Enrique Morente, promises
"a classic concert filled with inspired moments...and with the incorporation
of some interesting instrument, such as an elegant piano, a lovely violin, an
accordion". For the moment, all that's decided is the regular musicians,
guitarists Alfredo Lagos, Miguel Ochando and Montoyita. "The concert will
develop along with me" assures the artist.
The recital with which Estrella Morente, who received platinum and gold records
for her first two recordings, and which will formally close out the Bienal of
2002, represents the singer's return to the stage after her 'maternity leave'.
The artist is to reappear in Guaro on September 6th, a town in the mountains of
Málaga where last summer Carmen Linares and Manolo Sanlúcar presented
their work 'Locura de brisa y trino'.
Polyphony
Arcángel, broken in at previous editions of the festival, brings some
very clear ideas. The singer will present his concert 'Desde la tierra' which
owes its title to a conviction: "The interpretation of music like flamenco
must come from within". On this occasion the interpretation employed by the
singer who has been nominated for the Latin Grammys for his debut album 'Arcángel',
will be backed up by a lyrical chorus made up of eight people, because "the
harmonies of flamenco are complemented by the polyphony of voices". The daring
experiment will only include some songs from his record after a prelude which
he defines as "classic".
