BIENAL DE FLAMENCO DE SEVILLA
2008 GUIDE. GUITAR
A pinch of guitar
Flamenco-world.com, September 2008
Guitar doesn’t have as
much of a role as baile; not by a long shot. But the bill
of Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla 2008 still saves some
spaces for it. Just five, but select ones. The spotlight
falls on Manolo
Sanlúcar, an artist paid tribute at the festival
and who premieres his show inspired by the painting of
Baldomero Ressendi. Another veteran in the lineup is Víctor
Monge ‘Serranito’, who crosses flamenco’s
basic influences - Christian, Hebrew and Arab - in ‘La
noche de las tres lunas’. There are two recognized
artists of contemporary guitar, displaying the evolution
of their toque: Cañizares
with ‘Origen’ and Pedro Sierra with ‘Tres
movimientos’. Also included is the face-off between
classical and flamenco guitar by José María
Gallardo del Rey. And there is a sixth one which is somewhat
more concealed; newcomer Javier Conde sharing the night
at the Teatro Alameda.

September 19th. Teatro Lope de Vega (9 p.m.)
‘Baldomero Ressendi. La voz
del color’, Manolo Sanlúcar
Manolo
Sanlúcar is the figure that Bienal
2008 pays tribute to. And although he is scheduled
to perform in the inaugural gala, his night
will be that of the premiere of the new show
‘Baldomero Ressendi. La voz del color’
at the Teatro Lope de Vega. The guitar maestro
has spent several years devoted to the creation
of this work inspired by Ressendi’s
painting. The premiere coincides with the
celebration of his half a century dedicated
to music, a career which he narrates in first
person in the autobiography ‘El alma
compartida’.

September 26th. Teatro Central (9 p.m.)
‘Tres movimientos’, Pedro
Sierra
Solo guitar, accompaniment for baile and accompaniment
for cante. Pedro
Sierra vindicates the three facets he
masters on the six-strings. He will allude
to his two albums ‘Decisión’
and ‘Nikelao’ and will premiere
music, all of it without losing sight of the
reference of tradition. Cantaores Enrique
el Extremeño and La Tobala are some
of the artists accompanying him in this triple
concert at the Teatro Central.

October 1st. Teatro Lope de Vega (9 p.m.)
‘La noche de las tres lunas’,
Víctor Monge ‘Serranito’
The last time Víctor
Monge ‘Serranito’ attended
the Bienal was in an encounter with the
Cuban classical music of Camerata Romeu.
He now proposes another union, but this
time three-way. Christian, Hebrew and Arab
sounds are crossed in this concert in which
the Madrilenian toque maestro has multi-instrumentalist
Javier Paxariño and cantaora Eva
Durán as allies.

October 4th. Teatro Central (11 p.m.)
‘Origen’, Cañizares
Cañizares
takes a look back to re-encounter the influences
which fed his early days on flamenco guitar.
After going around the world with his reinterpretation
of Albéniz’s ‘Suite Iberia’,
an album awarded the 2008 Music Prize, he
once again plunges into flamenco headfirst.
The concert will be held in the intimacy
of a trio, with the special collaboration
of Fernando Romero on baile.

October 7th. Teatro Lope de Vega (9 p.m.)
‘Alquitara. La esencia de
los sonidos’, José María
Gallardo del Rey
Classical and flamenco guitar shake hands
once again. One decade later, José
María Gallardo del Rey returns to
Seville’s Bienal - whose signature
tune he authors - offering the festival
the premiere of his concert ‘Alquitara.
La esencia de los sonidos’. Spanish
classical musicians Falla, Albéniz
and Granados are joined by his own scores
in a show including, besides the La Maestranza
Orchestra, the participation of cantaor
Paco del Pozo and bailaora Pilar Ortega.
