Wednesday, September 10th is
the date set for the kick-off of Seville’s 15th
Bienal de Flamenco, which pays tribute to guitarist Manolo
Sanlúcar in this edition. The artist will be
in charge of opening the festival with the show ‘Tu
oído es más viejo que tu abuelo’,
conceived and directed by his brother, the producer and
composer Isidro Muñoz. The artists who will accompany
the maestro at Plaza de San Francisco include cantaor
Arcángel, bailaora Cristina Hoyos and bailaor Israel
Galván.

Different flamenco styles and excerpts
off of albums by Manolo Sanlúcar, such as ‘Medea’
and ‘Tauromagia’, will serve to go back over
his career. Fifty years devoted to flamenco guitar which
have made him worthy of the flamenco world’s recognition
in the setting of this fifteenth Bienal de Flamenco de
Sevilla. The Cádiz-born guitarist, who has been
described as “a man before his time” by the
mayor of Seville, Alfredo Sánchez Monteseirín,
has expressed his gratitude for this tribute: “I’ve
given my life to this culture because I’ve believed
in it from the very start”, he explained.
Together with the tributee on stage will
be dancer Cristina Hoyos, accompanied on baile by Israel
Galván and Juan de Juan, the cante of Arcángel,
José Valencia, Luis
el Zambo and Fernando de la Morena, plus the guitars
of David Carmona, Miguel Ángel Cortés, Daniel
Méndez and Manuel Morao. Moreover, the concert
will showcase one of Manolo Sanlúcar’s great
musical contributions; the opening of flamenco to other
musical expressions. And on this occasion it will be the
Bulgarian voices of the Bulgaria RTV Choir with ‘El
misterio de las voces búlgaras’ and classical
music contributed by the Orquesta Joven de Andalucía
(Andalusia Youth Orchestra).
The inaugural gala will take place at
ten o’clock at night in Seville at Plaza de San
Francisco, next to City Hall. The fact that it is to be
held outdoors for the first time on an open-air stage
responds to the desire to make flamenco reach everyone
and to recover the historic downtown area, recently turned
into a pedestrian zone. In this way, there will be 2600
free tickets available to visitors.
Flamenco’s big month
‘Tu oído es más viejo
que tu abuelo’ will kick off flamenco’s big
month in Seville, which has opted to open with guitar
as the star in this edition. A varied program this year
which has neither forgotten recognized figures nor young
flamencos or the future of this artform. The top stages
in the city will host a wide range of shows that will
be completed with the offer of related activities and
which will culminate when Enrique
Morente puts the icing on the cake on October 11th
at the Teatro de la Maestranza. Moreover, the number of
tickets has been extended and some of the events which
were sold out will bring new tickets out on sale.
