Cante is going to be the star of Seville’s Bienal de Flamenco 2010. On this sixteenth bill of the Sevillian macrofestival, the maxim is the slogan ‘Flamenco de viva voz’ (‘Flamenco in Person’). And although now acclaimed voices will ring out like those of El Lebrijano, Rancapino, Fernando de la Morena, Agujetas, Pansequito, La Macanita and Esperanza Fernández, those of many cantaores on the rise will also do so, presenting their first albums live. La Tremendita reveals ‘A tiempo’, David Lagos displays ‘El espejo en que me miro’ live and Antonio Campos his ‘Corral del Carbón’, Argentina journeys to ‘Las minas de Egipto’, Rocío Segura focuses on ‘Aires de Levante’ and David Palomar presents his second album ‘La viña. Cantón independiente’. Nearly all of the preceding batch of cantaores is also at this festival, sealing their maturity as artists: Miguel Poveda, Estrella Morente, Marina Heredia, Arcángel… And surely some new revelation on vocals will be discovered backing the dance companies.

Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla 2010 has reserved the Teatro Alameda for up-and-coming cante. The first voice to ring out will be that of a very new artist, the winner of the Andalusian Competition for Young Flamencos 2010, Sevillian cantaora Tamara Aguilera (September 18th). Already an experienced professional, but reserved up until now for accompaniment, David Lagos (September 19th) will display live his first album ‘El espejo en que me miro’, accompanied on guitar by Alfredo Lagos. From Jerez to Almería, where cantaora Rocío Segura (September 21st) brings her ‘Aires de Levante’ from.

La Tremendita

Antonio Campos (September 22nd) will provide the cante series with a Granada accent, reviving his début album ‘Corral del Carbón’. And the last installment of the series at the Alameda de Hércules comes from Cádiz and will be the premiere of the second album by David Palomar (September 23rd), who after making his début with ‘Trimilenaria’ launches the new disc ‘La Viña. Cantón independiente’. The other two premieres of young cante will be at other stages. The presentation in Seville of the second album by Huelva-born cantaora Argentina (September 25th), ‘Las minas de Egipto’, will be at the Teatro Lope de Vega. And the premiere of the disc ‘A tiempo’ by Rosario la Tremendita (October 4th) will take place at the Teatro Central.

The festival also makes room for the preceding batch of young cantaores who blossomed at the beginning of this decade and who now display maturity in their work. Case in point, the opening will star Miguel Poveda (September 15th), heading up a gala devoted to the history of flamenco cante which will take place at the bullring. Then at the Teatro de la Maestranza, the city’s largest venue, Estrella Morente (September 26th) will be there with a premiere concert; as well as Arcángel, who will display the face-off with guitarist José Antonio Rodríguez entitled ‘F2’ (September 28th). And Granada-born Marina Heredia (October 2nd) will bring her recent album ‘Marina’ to life at the Teatro Lope de Vega, where the until now singer Valderrama (September 23rd) will become a cantaor with the recital ‘Maestros’.

Although they don’t have a name of their own on the bill yet, many other cantaores will be undertaking the work of accompaniment behind the baile companies. Gema Caballero will be with Rocío Molina and with Concha Jareño; going with Farruquito, among others, will be Encarna Anillo and Pedro el Granaíno; Los Mellis and Toñi Nogaredo do the choruses for Argentina; Anabel Ribera will do them for Marina Heredia; El Pulga will sing together with Juan Carlos Romero; and El Galli and Miguel Lavi will back Fuensanta la Moneta. Even cantaores who have just released their first disc continue working as accompanists, as is the case of El Londro, who with his first album ‘Luna de enero’ already out on the market, will sing in Santiago Lara’s recital; and Miguel Ortega, who with his disc ‘Una mirada atrás’ recently released, will accompany Javier Barón. All of it without forgetting heavyweights of accompanying cante such as José Valencia, who will be with Javier Barón; and Juan José Amador, guest artist in ‘Alejandrías’.

Acclaimed voices

Together with the freshness of young voices will be the soundness of the already acclaimed ones. El Lebrijano (September 16th) revives ‘Casablanca’ at the Teatro de la Maestranza, an encounter between flamenco and Al-Andalusian music. Agujetas and José Menese (September 17th) converse at the Teatro Lope de Vega with the show entitled ‘Así se cantaba y así cantan’; voices from Jerez gather in the collective recital ‘Jerez, la uva y el cante’ (September 18th), with Fernando de la Morena, Luis el Zambo and El Torta; Juana la del Pipa, Dolores Agujetas and La Macanita sing in ‘Mujerez’ (September 24th); and Esperanza Fernández (October 7th) reveals ‘Raíces del alma’. At the charming setting of the Hotel Triana, cantaores Rancapino, Juan Villar and Mariana Cornejo will perform together in the show entitled ‘Cádiz eterna’ (September 18th); cantaores from Utrera such as Inés Bacán will star in ‘Negro como la endrina’; and with directing by cantaor Segundo Falcón, ‘Ensayo y tablao’ (October 2nd) will be displayed. And at the Teatro Central, veteran Cádiz-born cantaor Pansequito (September 30th) will perform his latest album ‘Un canto a la libertad’ live; and Manuel de Paula (October 8th) will put on his ‘An ca’ Paula’.
