BIENAL DE FLAMENCO DE SEVILLA 2010 • GUITAR
& MUSIC
Seville’s 2010 Bienal
sprinkles the bill with guitar, piano, rumba, rap and rock
concerts
Paco de Lucía, Tomatito, Dorantes, Kiko Veneno and
Raimundo Amador, main attractions of the instrumental music
program
S.C./ Flamenco-world.com, September 2010
Although baile and cante are in the foreground, guitar
and music will be the vital organs of each and every one
of the performances scheduled at Bienal de Flamenco de
Sevilla 2010. And they’re not the most numerous,
but there will also be several concerts entirely dedicated
to flamenco’s instrumental category. The most outstanding
one is undoubtedly the closing concert by Paco
de Lucía, which was sold out in a matter
of hours. Two weeks earlier, there will be a concert by
Tomatito, who is joined on the bill by other acclaimed
concert performers like Niño de Pura, José
Antonio Rodríguez and Juan Carlos Romero. There
are new toque proposals by David Carmona, Paco Escobar
and Santiago Lara. Piano momentarily visits the program
with the premiere of ‘Sin muros!’ by Dorantes.
There will be room for the most current music tangential
to flamenco at the Auditorio, with two collective concerts
gathering artists such as Kiko Veneno, Raimundo Amador
and La Mala.

Guitars
Paco de Lucía’s presence at Bienal de Flamenco
de Sevilla 2010, six years and three editions after his
previous appearance at this forum, has caused the utmost
expectation. And that is so despite still performing the
repertoire of ‘Cositas buenas’. The tickets
for his concert (October 9th, Teatro Maestranza), the
one closing the festival, are more than sold out. On the
same stage, a guitar recital will be offered by another
great in this speciality: Tomatito (September 25th). And
it will also be the stage where Córdoba-born guitarist
José Antonio Rodríguez shares the project
‘F2’ with cantaor Arcángel (September
28th), a face-off between solo toque and cante.
Playing with his stage name, Sevillian guitarist Niño
de Pura premieres ‘Flamen-pura’ at the Teatro
Central (September 17th), a recital in which he will combine
scores from his latest disc ‘Pozo y caudal’
and will provide a glimpse of pieces on the album he is
scheduled to release next spring. Cantaor Churumbaque,
winner of the Lámpara Minera 2009, will be his
guest star. At that same theater, Huelva-born Juan Carlos
Romero will unveil a new concert entitled ‘El agua
encendida’ (October 1st), in the company of La Susi,
José Valencia and Tino di Geraldo.

New proposals will take place at the Teatro Alameda.
The series will be opened by Granada-born guitarist David
Carmona (September 16th), a follower of Manolo Sanlúcar,
appearing solo for the first time. Sevillian guitarist
and musicologist Paco Escobar displays the suite for guitar
‘A contratiempo’ (September 20th), an exploration
of the genre’s musical inner worlds which he will
tackle by dialoguing with instruments such as the viola,
piano and bandoneon. And it is closed by Jerez-born Santiago
Lara (September 27th) with a new repertoire which will
be his second solo album: ‘Concuerda’.

…and a piano
In this sixteenth Bienal there will only be one instrumental
concert. It will be ‘Sin muros!’ by Dorantes,
scheduled for September 22nd at the Teatro Maestranza.
The Lebrija-born pianist is inspired by the phrase “I
want a world without borders, where every door is open”
to create this new concert. And to that end, he will be
backed by José Mercé, Esperanza Fernández,
Juan Peña ‘El Lebrijano’ and El Pele
as a luxurious lineup of guest cantaores.
Rock, rap and rumba
Those who reach flamenco at a tangent are awaited at
La Isla de la Cartuja’s Auditorio. There are two
rendezvous there. The first one is with rumba on the night
of September 17th, in three versions: Peret’s, the
group Los Chichos’ and Kiko Veneno’s. The
second one is with rock and with rap on September 24th.
A twin bill is offered shared between guitarist and singer
Raimundo Amador presenting the new album ‘Medio
hombre, medio guitarra’ with Remedios Amaya as guest
artist; and Sevillian rapper La Mala Rodríguez,
with a live performance of her new album ‘Dirty
bailarina’.
