Subtle, spontaneous, intense, piercing,
graceful… Cañizares, who took care of opening
the 2007/2008 Flamenco Thursdays series at Seville’s
Centro Cultural Cajasol, thus delighted the crowd once
again with his guitar. ‘Iberia flamenco’ is
the name Cañizares
gives to his new live show, in which he is accompanied
by Juan Carlos Gómez on second guitar, José
de Lucía on bass and Roberto Vozmediano on percussion.
The show was split up into two blocks. In the first part,
the guitarist popped a surprise with an excerpt from ‘Suite
iberia’, which composer Isaac Albéniz
created for piano and which Cañizares has turned
into toque flamenco. He performed ‘Evocación’,
‘El puerto’, ‘El Albaicín’
and ‘Málaga’. The maestro’s skill,
subtlety and sensitivity blended together, giving rise
to a clear, perfect dialogue between two guitars at the
same time as he combined classical and flamenco nuances.
He demonstrated overwhelming mastery, strumming his strings
with a wide range of both classical and flamenco touches
when performing the scores.

Precise and technical. But warm and showing
surprising sound at the same time. Really delightful contrasts
in sound which he already has the crowd used to (who,
by the way, barely filled the venue to half capacity),
but nevertheless surprising. And he did so, for example,
using flamenco rhythms in some of the pieces of the suite,
like the parts of ‘El Albaicín’ he
did por tanguillos accompanied by bass and percussion
and respecting the nature of both styles at all times.
In the second part, he offered a flamenco
guitar recital where he played some of his most outstanding
songs such as the bulerías ‘La Pajarraca’,
the colombiana ‘Como dos niños’, the
ballad ‘Lejana’ and the rumba ‘Lluvia
de cometas’, among others. His impressive mastery
of technique, compás, harmony and improvisation
went hand-in-hand with the flamenco nature, warmth and
flavor he gives to each and every song of his. Brilliant
sounds, subtle, elegant melodies. Broad knowledge of the
style and nature of each flamenco variety. Encircling
harmonics, bright, crystal-clear tremolos. Open sounds
where he gives improvisation a huge margin. A modern,
avant-garde focus of flamenco music which nevertheless
maintains its essence. A display of art through a master
class in classical and flamenco guitar.
