SEVILLE’S 2006 BIENAL DE FLAMENCO. PREMIERE: ‘MUJERES
DE LORCA’
Carmen Cortés
premieres the flamenco play
‘Mujeres de Lorca’ at Seville’s 2006 Bienal
S.C./Flamenco-world.com, August 2006
Flamenco once again resorts to Federico García
Lorca as a source of inspiration. Bailaora Carmen
Cortés zeroes in on the female characters of the
plays by the Granada-born writer. ‘Mujeres de Lorca’,
which is to premiere at Seville’s 2006 Bienal de Flamenco
on September 27th and 29th at the Teatro Central, has translated
to flamenco style plays such as ‘La casa de Bernarda
Alba’, ‘Yerma’ and ‘Mariana Pineda’,
among others, with the help of playwright Tomás Afán
and stage director Fernando Bernués. Carmen Cortés
will move five bailaoras around on stage to the sound of music
composed by guitarist David Cerreduela.
Carmen Cortés takes literature as her muse once again.
If in her previous show she translated ‘La Celestina’
by Fernando de Rojas to flamenco style, she now returns to
Federico García Lorca. And she again approaches the
Granada-born writer, who already inspired her shows ‘A
Federico’ and ‘Yerma’ (with music by Gerardo
Núñez), highlighting the female characters in
his plays.
Specifically, notice is taken of ‘La Casa de Bernarda
Alba’, ‘Yerma’, ‘La zapatera prodigiosa’,
‘Doña Rosita la Soltera’, ‘Mariana
Pineda’ and ‘Bodas
de Sangre’. And she picks out the female roles from
those plays, since as the libretto explains, “Women
are the ones that move the pages of Lorca’s theater;
the men are sitting there on the lines, or walking between
the lines”.
Dramatic art
In this new production, Carmen Cortés has counted
on a drama specialist, Tomás Afán, and another
in stage design, Fernando Bernués. Under the musical
directing of musicologist Faustino Núñez –
who already worked on ‘Fuenteovejuna’ by Antonio
Gades-, compositions by guitarist David Cerreduela will be
played. The musical group includes artists such as Ramón
el Portugués, Paco Cruz and Juan Jiménez,
among others. The dance corps will perform choreographies
by Carmen Cortés and will consist of Trinidad Artíguez,
Esther Esteban, Natalia Ferrandis, Elena Cabezas and Silvia
Rincón.
The new show is to premiere on September 27th and 29th at
Seville’s Teatro Central, within the framework of the
2006 Bienal de Flamenco. Later on, the work will be put on
from October 5th to 15th at the Teatro Español in Madrid,
where the group is a resident company .
