A new flamenco company is born at the 30th Córdoba
Guitar Festival. Requetedanza, a project directed by Javier
Latorre, premieres its first production ‘El
duende y el reloj’ on July 7th at the Gran Teatro,
where it is the resident company. The show, based on a
script by physicist and ethnomusicologist Philippe Donnier,
“is a choreographic-dramatic story which explains
flamenco’s main styles”, the director explains.
The festival’s flamenco program continues on the
same stage with ‘Lluvia’ by Eva Yerbabuena,
while at the Teatro de la Axerquía ‘F2’
is presented by Arcángel and José Antonio
Rodríguez, and Paco de Lucía performs a
recital closing the circle opened by Paco Peña’s
concert at the Mezquita (Mosque).

‘El duende y el reloj’ begins with what French
author Philippe Donnier has called the “big-bang
of compás”. As explains Javier Latorre, director
and choreographer of the new Córdoba-based company
Requetedanza, “it doesn’t mean we’ve
discovered the scientific origin of compás, but
rather it’s simply a sneeze by El Duende, which
triggers an explosion that unleashes our creation”.
According to the director, in the show personages such
as Leonardo, Descartes, Einstein and Dalí “become
flamenco for a while, both to establish the difference
between alegrías and soleá, and between
guajira and cabal, as well as to explain the slowing down
of the rhythm in fandangos, by means of Dalí’s
drooping clocks”.

Given that Requetedanza aims to provide
Córdoba with a stable flamenco company, the lineup
of artists consists “largely of Córdoba-born
artists with whom we intend to open the channels of creative
connection between different disciplines”. And thus,
Juana Martín’s designs, Antonio Zurera’s
animations, Gabriel Expósito’s music and Daniel
Navarro’s baile all converge. The lineup is joined
by guitarist Juan Requena, Jesús
Corbacho on cante, Pepe Quero as stage director and
Nicolás Fischtel on lighting. The dance corps consists
of dancers trained at the Dance Center which Latorre has
directed at La Axerquía since 2007.
More flamenco at the 2010 Guitar
Festival
Following the premiere of ‘El duende
y el reloj’, the flamenco program of the 2010 Guitar
Festival continues at the Teatro de la Axerquía,
where the concert ‘F2’ will be presented by
Arcángel and José Antonio Rodríguez
on July 10th. On Monday, July 12th at the Gran Teatro, Eva
Yerbabuena is to perform ‘Lluvia’,
which has already traveled halfway around the world following
its premiere at Festival de Jerez 2009. Then at the close
on July 24th, Paco de Lucía will also offer a recital
at La Axerquía. Thus coming to an end will be the
jondo journey begun on July 6th with the inaugural concert
by Paco Peña at the Mezquita. Moreover, the festival
offers a training program highlighted by Manolo Sanlúcar’s
flamenco guitar seminar as well as cante and baile courses.
