The selection of flamenco dance courses on offer swells as Summer draws
near. The 'Taller Flamenco' school holds dance workshops in Seville during September,
to coincide with the XII Biennial Flamenco Festival, and boasting the presence
of Joaquín Grilo, María del Mar Moreno, Mercedes Ruiz and Andrés
Peña. A month earlier, Jerez's 'Danzaluzía' school runs courses
taught by Antonio el Pipa, María José Franco, Raúl Ruiz and
Patricia Ibáñez. Fundación Cristina Heeren and Casa Patas
also offer intensive Summer courses, in Seville and Madrid respectively.

Taller Flamenco's studio
Taller Flamenco rekindles the flamenco tradition in the 'La Alameda' barrio
of Seville. To add to it's range of permanent year-long and Summer intensive courses,
the school is running a tempting line-up of workshops to be held between 9th and
27th September 2002, to coincide with Sevilles twelfth Biennial Flamenco Festival.
The teaching staff is made up of bailaores Joaquín Grilo, well-known
for his regular work with Paco de Lucía, and María del Mar Moreno,
both natives of Jerez. Working alongside them will be Mercedes Ruiz and Andrés
Peña, both members of the Eva la Yerbabuena Company. The courses, with
guitar and vocal accompaniment supplied, are aimed at advanced and professional
level students looking to perfect their skills.
Joaquín Grilo explores flamenco technique, bulerías and
el fandango de Huelva in depth, from 23th to 27th September. María
del Mar Moreno will focus, from 16th to 20th September, on seguiriyas and
bulerías. Mercedes Ruiz meanwhile will stick to bulerías,
and Andrés Peña to bulerías por soleá, both
between 9th and 13th September. The courses page at Flamenco-world.com offers
further information
and allows you to make bookings. In parallel, Taller Flamenco is also running
intensive dance and technique courses open to all levels. From 2nd to 13th September
in its main building, there will be classes on tangos, tangos de Málaga,
alegrías and seguiriyas; and from 16th to 27th September,
tangos, tientos, soleá por bulerías and bulerías.
Alongside the training program they will be offering complementary Spanish classes
for overseas students and an additional accommodation service.
Jerez de la Frontera, in the Andalusian province of Cadiz, is another flamenco
dance focal point this Summer. The recently inaugurated Danzaluzía Flamenco
Activity Center, where native bailaor Antonio el Pipa's dance company is based,
will hold its first international flamenco dance and guitar courses in August.
The dance classes, covering all levels, will be taught by Antonio el Pipa himself
and María José Franco, bailaora solista from his company, together
with Raúl Ruiz and Patricia Ibáñez. The guitar courses will
be under the instruction of Pascual de Lorca and Juan Moneo. Find more information
and make bookings via Flamenco-world.com.
The two leading Flamenco Foundations are also preparing for the Summer season.
Fundación Cristina Heeren, in Seville, and Casa Patas, in Madrid, are each
drawing up a program of intensive Summer courses in July. Fundación Cristina
Heeren offers flamenco courses in the areas of cante (singing), baile
(dance) and toque (guitar accompaniment), for which, in association with
Flamenco-world.com, two scholarships have been awarded. Fundación Casa
Patas focuses on flamenco dance, guitar - both solo and to accompany cante - and
percussion. Full details of the courses can be found on the Courses
page.
