SPECIAL FEATURE. FLAMENCO DISCOGRAPHIES. CARMEN LINARES
Cantaora of wind and earth
Flamenco-world.com, September 2009
Carmen
Linares is one of the main voices of our time. Elegant,
serious, emotional and versatile, the ‘lady of cante’
has managed to forge one of the genre’s most prestigious
musical careers. An album stands out from her discography
which is now a ‘must’ that marked a turning
point in her career: ‘Antología. La mujer en
el cante’. Earlier, there were several classical-style
discs and even a remake of Lorca’s ‘Canciones
populares’. Afterwards, challenges of the complexity
of ‘Locura de brisa y trino’ by Manolo Sanlúcar,
her personal ‘Un ramito de locura’ and her most
recent album, a poetic tribute to Juan Ramón Jiménez
entitled ‘Raíces y alas’. That’s
the way she is; bound to the earth but free to fly.

Raíces
y Alas 2008
‘Raíces y alas’
is Carmen Linares’s tribute to Juan Ramón
Jiménez. With musical and vocal scores
created by guitarist Juan
Carlos Romero, the cantaora performs with
jondo flavor choice nuances and wisdom excerpted
from the work of the Huelva-born poet, winner
of the Nobel Prize for Literature. The disc
turns verses such as ‘Remembranzas’
and ‘Canción de madre’ into
cantes and songs. Self-produced and published
by her own label, she presents the album in
an elaborate book-record edition, with photos
of the poet and all the verses. |

| Un
ramito de locura 2002
One year after winning the National Music Prize,
the Jaén-born cantaora presented ‘Un
ramito de locura’ together with guitarist
and composer Gerardo
Núñez. Both of them play at
musically harmonizing classical cante on this
album, with brilliant, elegant results. Moreover,
they take the liberty of "heterodoxies"
like the versions of 'Milonga del Forastero'
by Borges and 'Quiero tu nombre olvidar' by
the group Vainica Doble.

Antología.
La mujer en el cante 1997
Carmen Linares’s greatest album is undoubtedly
‘Antología. La mujer en el cante’,
a complete, indispensable journey through
every cante style performed in the past by
women such as La Perla, Juana Cruz, La Repompa,
Pepa Oro and La Niña de los Peines.
And she does so with leading guitarists of
the flamenco world, including Vicente Amigo,
Pepe Habichuela, Tomatito
and Moraíto. Ten years later, a commemorative
edition was released with a bonus DVD including
the live presentation at the Teatro Monumental
in Madrid and interviews.

| Canciones
populares antiguas 1993
After singing Lorca’s ‘El amor brujo’
at the Lincoln Center as guest of the New York
Symphony Orchestra, Carmen Linares rescued from
oblivion ‘Canciones
populares españolas’ which
was recorded in 1931 by Federico himself on
piano and La Argentinita on vocals. In her version,
the coplas turn into cantes; for example, ‘Anda
jaleo’ goes por bulerías and ‘Zorongo
gitano’, por tangos. In this project,
which she still sings live, she was accompanied
by guitarists Paco and Miguel Ángel Cortés
as well as Perico el del Lunar.

| La
luna en el río 1991
‘La luna en el río’ follows
the path of ‘Cantaora’. Released
in 1991, also with the guitars of Paco Cortés
and Pedro
Sierra, Carmen Linares performs her praised
encyclopedism. She tackles romeras, peteneras
and malagueñas, besides basic styles.
But on this album, she opens up the range of
instrumental arrangements more, allowing herself
to be accompanied by musicians such as bass
player Carles Benavent, violinist Bernardo Parrilla,
flutist Juan Parrilla and bailaor Javier Barón.

Cantaora
1988
‘Cantaora’ is one of the first
recordings by cantaora Carmen Linares, released
in 1988. Accompanied on toque by Paco Cortés
and Pedro Sierra, she is confirmed as a lengthy,
encyclopedic cantaora with a strong personality,
but interested in stressing the classics.
Tangos, tarantas, bulerías, soleares,
seguiriyas... are part of this repertoire
which in time has become a work that is a
“must” to listen to.

| Su

Carmen Linares’s early days are captured
on ‘Su cante’. On this disc, she

captured that first stage of her career when
she turned professional at the main tablaos
in Madrid, beside talents at the time such as
