The versatile (and ‘in’) cantaor

Miguel Poveda is an image of flamenco today. A young cantaor, with a mastery of tradition, the stage, hybrids and audiences, who performs a seguiriya with the same intensity and vocal quality as a copla or poem with jazz accompaniment. He upholds his early 2007 National Music Prize with a constant, varied record career which kicked off back in the mid-’90s, right after winning the Lámpara Minera at the La Unión contest. Between ‘Viento del Este’ and ‘Coplas de querer’ there’s a lot of ‘Miguel Poveda music’ to enjoy… in Spanish, in Catalan, in flamenco, in tango, in copla and in jazz. But he still has a lot left to say, since he doesn’t feel “that I’ve made my flamenco album yet”. Meanwhile…

Coplas del querer 2009
Miguel Poveda has always maintained that he reached flamenco thanks to the coplas which his mother used to listen to on the radio. Of course, the ones who performed them were first-rate cantaores such as La Paquera and Manolo Caracol. And he never lost that bond, halfway between cante and the Spanish tonadilla. In fact, on this ‘Coplas del querer’ he settles this tale of love for music with a double album on which he performs no fewer than 18 coplas accompanied by guitarist Chicuelo and the contemporary orchestrations of Joan Albert Amargós. Moreover, ‘A ciegas’, the main track on the soundtrack of Almodóvar’s film ‘Los abrazos rotos’, is included. By the way, this has been his first hit album, his first Gold Record.

Cante i orquesta 2008
Miguel Poveda sings on the record ‘Cante i Orquestra’ accompanied by an orchestra and Chicuelo on guitar. With the sound of the Simfonietta Porta Ferrada, conducted by Joan Albert Amargós, the Catalan cantaor performs styles such as bulerías, seguiriyas, alegrías and tientos. He adds the sonnet ‘Romance de la dulce queja’ by Lorca, the copla ‘Telo juro yo’ and the Catalan folk song ‘El cant dels ocells’ to this repertoire. The album was recorded live on August 4th, 2007 at the 21st Castell de Peralada Festival, after several years developing the project. It began seven years earlier as an initiative of Barcelona’s Grec Festival, Vic’s Mercat de la Música Viva and Taller de Musics, and was performed at different festivals with orchestras such as the Malmö Symphonic and the National Orchestra of Spain.

Tierra de calma 2006
An album entirely composed by guitarist Juan Carlos Romero which pays homage to Sevilla, the city where Miguel Poveda has lived for several years. After his dabblings in contemporary music, Argentinean tango and poetry in Catalan, Miguel Poveda returns to flamenco territory. Released to coincide with the live première at the 2006 Festival Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla, the album includes tangos, farrucas, bulerías, malagueñas o sevillanas created expressly for his voice.


Desglaç 2005
An album of Catalonian songs performed by Miguel Poveda. Not a flamenco album, but a collector's item for his followers. A selection of poems turned into music by composers such as Enric Palomar, Chicuelo, Marcelo Mercadante, José Reinoso and self Miguel Poveda, including collaborations with Gil Miquel, Moncho, Joan Albert Amargós and Antonio Serrano. The poets chosen were Maria Mercè Marçal, Verdaguer, Gabriel Ferrater, Josep Piera, Sebastià Alzamora, Narcis Comadira, Valenti Gomez, Joan Margarit, Joan Barceló, Joan Brossa and Enric Casasses. It includes an interesting DVD documentary.

Poemas del exilio 2004
Live recording at L'Auditori in Barcelona on May 7, 2003, 'Poemas del exilio' is a suite for voice and chamber orchestra, directed by Enric Palomar. In his fourth album, Poveda turns “jondo” a selection of poems by Rafael Alberti in exile, verses of the book ‘Entre el clavel y la espada’ and ‘Baladas y canciones del Paraná’. Although not all flamenco, as in this CD, whose music is interpreted by the Taller de Musics’ Big Ensemble, also accommodates the milonga and the tango of Argentina in which the poet took refuge.


Zaguán 2001
Following two early albums, Miguel Poveda consolidates his cantaor discourse on ‘Zaguán’. On this record, he adapts styles like the liviana, the cantiña and the pregón, combining old-time references with his own contribution of freshness, very evident in the tangos ‘Con esa morena’. Here, he had the close collaboration of Chicuelo as music director and co-producer, as well as the special collaboration of toque maestro Juan Habichuela. The participation of Luis el Zambo and Moraíto would seal a link with Jerez flamenco which he would later turn into the show ‘Sin fronteras’.

Suena flamenco 1998
On his second solo album, Miguel Poveda broadens registers upon performing a selection of styles very different to that of his début album. On the one hand, he throws himself into rhythm styles like bulerías, rumba, tangos, alegrías and tanguillos. And on the other hand, he plunges into styles with a sweet, melodic, song-style edge such as zambras, romance and granaína. He has Chicuelo and Moraíto on guitars, and his special collaborators include cantaora Montse Cortés and arranger Joan Albert Amargós, who he will keep on collaborating with in the future.


Viento del Este 1995
Shortly after becoming known upon winning the Lámpara Minera and three other awards at the 1993 La Unión Cante de las Minas Festival, Miguel Poveda recorded his first disc. ‘Viento del Este’ was the Catalan cantaor’s début album, a letter of introduction with a variety of styles, from the bulería to the toná, with fandangos, soleá and cartagenera in between, influenced by maestros such as El Gloria, Varea, Chacón, Mairena and Camarón. He was accompanied by Moraíto, Pepe Habichuela and Julián el Califa on guitars, and had the special collaboration of José Soto ‘Sorderita’. In 2010, the disc is re-released in a special digipack version which, besides the original album, includes four cantes recorded live at La Unión, accompanied on guitar by Juan Ramón Caro.


Collaborations

Rosa de los vientos 2010
Juan Ramón Caro was one of the guitarists who backed Miguel Poveda in his early days. And it was only natural for him to collaborate on his colleague’s first album. He does so by lending his voice to the cantiñas ‘Valle del Sol’.

Un canto a la libertad 2009
On the disc ‘Un canto a la libertad’ by Cádiz-born cantaor Pansequito, Miguel Poveda collaborates by performing the bulerías ‘María Elena’.

Barcas de plata 2008
His collaboration on Encarna Anillo’s album ‘Barcas de plata’ goes way beyond the lyrics which he sings in the bulerías ‘Dulce veneno’. Poveda appears in the credits as the album’s executive producer and was the one who pushed the young Cádiz-born to take the step forward.

Viento del Norte 2008
Guitarist Jesús Torres chose Miguel Poveda - who he coincided with in Isabel Bayón’s show ‘La puerta abierta’ - to sing the jabera ‘Mármol de espuma’ for him on his disc ‘Viento del Norte’. And he did so because “the timbre of his voice is really warm, because he has great taste in everything he does”.

Trabajito de chinos 2008
With the sui generis singer and bailaora La Shica, Miguel Poveda did a special collaboration in the sweet song ‘Dos carnes paralelas’ on her début album ‘Trabajito de chinos’.

Flamenco big band 2008
After being awarded the 2007 National Music Prize in performance, Poveda tackles an active year of collaborations. The one he does with Perico Sambeat in ‘Flamenco big band’ features his versatility amidst an orchestra and jazz. But really, he sings por martinete, bulerías, soleá, tanguillos, guajira… and a lullaby.

Qawwali flamenco 2006
Duquende, Chicuelo and Miguel Poveda were the flamencos who faced the challenge of bridging the gap with the qawwali music of Faiz Ali Faiz. The project was born live, promoted by Taller de Musics, and ended up materializing into a book-album with 2 CDs and an interesting DVD on the process.

Territorio flamenco 2003
On the collective album ‘Territorio flamenco’, where several cantaores perform great songs of universal music, Miguel Poveda took over the Argentinean tango ‘Cuesta abajo’, a genre he would touch on some time later and with a great deal of ease in ‘Poemas del exilio’.
