SPECIAL FEATURE. SUMMER 2010 FLAMENCO ALBUMS
Miscegenation, voices and sales
Flamenco-world.com, August 2010
Summer, vacation and… flamenco!
The summer season is a perfect time to get up-to-date on
the latest in cante, toque and music. In your car, at the
swimming pool, at the beach, in the countryside, on your
iPod, on your laptop… and even when working or studying,
any place, situation and format is good to brush up on this
genre’s newest albums. Encounters, fresh voices, live
shows, Cigala’s
tangos, Mercé’s ‘Ruido’, rock
groups, kiddies, compilations on sale… There’s
a bit of everything for everyone if flamenco is your summer
soundtrack.

The coolest things are the miscegenations,
whether they’re sung like the one by Diego
el Cigala with Argentinean tango; or they’re instrumental,
like the one by Pepe Habichuela side by side with jazz contrabass
player Dave Holland on ‘Hands’.
Also curious is ‘Alegrías’, a mestizo
album by American singer and composer Howe Gelb in collaboration
with Raimundo Amador, released on CD and vinyl.

Guitar brings original options like ‘Anyway’
by Brazilian Flavio Rodrigues and Cano’s ‘Flamenco
crossover’. For cante lovers, there’s a nice
bunch of fresh voices like Marina Heredia, El
Londro and Miguel Ortega personalizing the classics.
And you can also opt for the latest installments by veterans
such as Enrique Morente, with a second collection of old
live recordings, and José
Mercé, with the refreshing flamenco on his ‘Ruido’.
Those seeking more action, more eclecticism,
a bit of rock or a bit of pop, have a couple of recommendable
alternatives in the most recent releases by groups like
ElBicho and Mixtolobo. The sweetness of Las Migas is a relaxing
option. And in Soniquete the little ones will be able to
find songs as fun as the rumba ‘Chocolate’.
Ah, it’s also time for sales, and there is a wide
variety of compilations at a good price with the title ‘El
flamenco es…’, which covers from Camarón
to Pitingo, with Lebrijano, Bambino,
Raimundo Amador and Paco Toronjo, among many others, in
between.
But if you have time to leisurely browse
through Flamenco-world.com, you’ll be able to find
a great many more options. Use the search engine for products
which is on each page, check the special offers
and new
releases and consult the listening
guides, interviews and reviews.
Then in September, there will be new releases. The most
relevant one, ‘Cuerdas del alma’ by Cañizares.
We’ll keep you informed.
