It’s a time for solidarity. In
the same week and the same city, two festivals involve
flamenco in altruistic causes. The first one to be held
was Festival Flamenco por Gambo, in favor of the projects
of the NGO
El Alto in Ethiopia. The first edition was championed
by cante maestra Carmen
Linares, warmly accompanied by her group and
determined to give a chance to a rising young talent,
Cádiz-born Encarna
Anillo. Doubly generous, then. The concert preceded
by the showing of an audiovisual which showed those present
the destination of their collaboration, the hospital pharmacy
services of a center which now provides health care to
one million people. The cause was well deserving of the
crowd and artists’ devotion. And so it was.
The video hardly having finished, the
applause from the audience mixed with the clapping por
tangos of the group, who gave their introduction fiesta
overtones. It sounded like old-time stuff, like Pastora
Pavón, like a gathering. And without wasting much
time, Carmen Linares left her place to her artistic godchild.
Encarna Anillo picked up the invitation with the temperance
of an expert. He chose alegrías, which are nearly
innate to her, to start off. But she chewed them over
slowly, unhurriedly, pressing only when she found it convenient.
“This is a special, important day, since these events
are held very little. And one feels great satisfaction
in giving to those who are needy... through my cante.
To them”. She wanted to express with a few heartfelt
words what her voice was going to express little by little.
Together with Juan
Diego something magical arises, something overwhelming.
The Málaga-born artist more sensitive than you
can imagine. She changes guitarists for the soleá.
How pretty her moan is, how sweet her grief is, how heartfelt.
She can’t find words to return her place to Carmen
Linares. But first, she bids farewell por bulerías.
Variety song style, standing, devoting herself and decorating
it all with a touch of baile. Encarna Anillo begins her
conquest of Madrid, very shortly before the upcoming release
of her first solo album.

A solo by Juan Diego acts as a hinge.
It’s none other than ‘Musgo’, one of
the most beautiful scores of today’s guitar. And
then she comes in; the lady of cante. The first thing
she does is to thank all her colleagues for unselfishly
collaborating in the cause. And secondly, she apologizes
for the sound problems. A jam was to blame. The crowd
had more than forgiven them. And the musicians managed
to face the screeching with the integrity of true professionals.
And then she began to sing. She also opted for alegrías,
uttered with reliability and meaning. She wanted her son
Eduardo Pacheco – who is gaining confidence in every
performance - to accompany her por tarantas, in a private
tribute they had pending. She soared to the heavens. With
Juan Diego on Jerez-style guitar, Tino
di Geraldo on Hindu tabla and the González
siblings on clapping, the cantaora did bulería
por soleá, opening up and closing the cante depending
on the climate. Next came that jondo jewel por seguiriyas
of Ponce and Cristina and death. And at the end, the resurrection
por bulerías, “anda jaleo”, she proclaims
in favor of the young people who are working for gestures
like this to be possible and the grand finale which had
to be joined by the artists who were within reach; none
other than bailaores Paco Romero and La
Chunga. The call for solidarity is contagious... The
next event is at Colegio Mayor San Juan Evangelista on
Friday, October 19th and the 20th, where artists such
as Duquende, Marina Heredia, Arcángel and José
Mercé will commit their flamenco to projects of
the NGO Solidarios
for Development. Quejío doesn’t remain merely
a moan.
