Andalucía Flamenca opened its
third attempt to establish itself in Madrid with a more
than sure bet: Gerardo Núñez’s basic
concert. The Jerez-born guitarist, a methodical virtuoso,
once again put to the test before the crowd how that recital
of his works in which he seasons quite a few of his most
outstanding scores with touches of baile by Carmen Cortés,
with some lyrics sung by cantaor Jesús Méndez,
with Cepillo’s fresh percussion, with backing on
guitar by Manuel Valencia and with the elegant contrabass
of Pablo
Martín. Like so many times over the past few
years. It never fails.
The audience, consisting mainly of guests
at this premiere, really enjoyed themselves with his well-known
scores to the beat of soleá por bulerías,
alegrías, soleares and bulerías de fiesta.
And even with the nice gag of the contrabass. But, of
course, each concert is a unique experience no matter
how much it is repeated. And on this occasion at the Sala
de Cámara of the Auditorio Nacional de Música,
the maturity on stage which Méndez has acquired
over time stood out; as well as how priceless the experience
always is of listening to solo guitar for a few minutes:
hands, wood and ears. The group’s coherence, of
course, is taken for granted by now.
Andalucía Flamenca 2010 is the
third edition of the “stable” flamenco series
which the Junta de Andalucía is promoting in Madrid.
Following the failure at the box office of the first rash
attempt in 2007 at a private theater on the Gran Vía,
the Culture Council tried again last year in alliance
with the Ministry of Culture. So flamenco had already
sprinkled the program of the Sala de Cámara of
the Auditorio Nacional de Música. For 2010, the
rapport is repeated and although the announcement was
made scarcely three days in advance and there are still
dates to be confirmed, the series is already under way.
In total, there are going to be seven
performances scheduled intermittently throughout the season.
Following the opening by Gerardo Núñez,
the series will continue on March 13th with pianist Pedro
Ricardo Miño. It won’t be until May 15th
when it is resumed by guitarist Cañizares,
followed by Cádiz-born cantaoras Mariana Cornejo
and Encarna Anillo on June 21st. The dates will soon be
confirmed of recitals by Calixto Sánchez and Rocío
Márquez, Luis de Córdoba and Jesús
Méndez and Mayte Martín.
