Baile shows

If only every flamenco show premiering were released on DVD. Not just for the enjoyment of fans all over the world, but also to put together an audiovisual flamenco archive. But the reality is quite another matter. Of the most popular bailaores, only available to the public for the time being is ‘Mariana Pineda’ by Sara Baras, ‘Live at the Royal Albert Hall’ by Joaquín Cortés and ‘Pasión y ley’ by Antonio el Pipa. ‘Torero’ by Antonio Canales, but it isn't always in the catalogue. Far from the big shows, the series ‘Jóvenes Maestros del Baile Flamenco’ makes it possible to see flamenco in a traditional format with María del Mar Moreno, on the one hand, and with Rafael Campallo, on the other. You can also appreciate how flamenco dancing is adapted to the tablaos on DVDs such as those of the series ‘Noches en Casa Patas’, ‘Tablao Las Carboneras’ and ‘La noche flamenca’, all of which are with young talents of today's flamenco dancing. Keep an eye on the website catalogue, since new titles are expected to appear in the upcoming months from artists like Farruquito.

Guitar concerts

Paco de Lucía. Frame from Directo Alemania 1996

There's nothing more highly appreciated by guitar students than picking up flourishes. And what better way to do so than from the greats. The DVD makes it possible to put the picture in slow motion, stop it and play it over and over again. And not just that. All guitar lovers enjoy a good live concert, well-produced and with good sound quality. Paco de Lucía is the most prolific flamenco artist on video. He has several live shows out on the market, among them, ‘Meeting of the spirits’ with Al di Meola; as well as the documentaries ‘Light and shade’ and ‘Francisco Sánchez-Paco de Lucía’. Another maestro who has recorded a live show, but in his case at the studio, is Víctor Monge Serranito. He is joined by Córdoba-born Paco Peña with his world-famous ‘Misa flamenca’. Of the latest batch, Vicente Amigo has a recorded concert with the repertoire of his album ‘Ciudad de las ideas’; as well as Óscar Herrero with a studio concert. The most current thing is the DVD of the final of the 2005 International Flamenco Guitar Contest, with new talents such as Antonio Rey, Santiago Lara and Eduardo Trassierra, among others. To take a look back at the past, a TV recording with excellent production of Sabicas live was recently recovered, with the title ‘King of flamenco guitar’

Cante performances

If the strength of cante besides being heard, can be seen, it has twice the impact. There aren't many cante titles on DVD, but some basic ones are at the disposal of enthusiasts such as that of Camarón in Paris, in a historic concert at the Cirque d’Hiver accompanied by guitarist Tomatito; and ‘Lo mejor de José Mercé’, with the live shows of 'Aire' at Madrid's Teatro Real and of 'Lío' at the Teatro Villamarta in Jerez. Although it strays from traditional cante, it's a pleasure to watch the concert of the album of flamenco-style versions of boleros by cantaor Diego el Cigala and Cuban pianist Bebo Valdés, recorded in Majorca in 2003. José Menese decided to release his latest album based on poems from Spain's Golden Age at the same time as the DVD with the live show at Seville's Teatro de la Maestranza in 2004, with an orchestra conducted by Joan Albert Amargós and Enrique de Melchor on guitar. Little by little, material some years old is being recovered but which is still unreleased to the general public, such as ‘Inés, hermana mía’, an interesting DVD with a documentary and live performance by cantaora Inés Bacán and guitarist Pedro Bacán.

Group concerts

Dorantes and Carles Benavent. Frame from Flamencos del siglo XXI

The boom of flamenco fusion groups over the past three decades has led to an active production of records and videos. There are now hardly any groups in this current close to pop, rock, jazz or hip hop that don't accompany a new album with a DVD. They've done so since Chano Domínguez, who has in ‘Mira cómo viene’ the visual complement to the album ‘Oye cómo viene’; to Niña Pastori, who launched a special edition with the album and the DVD ‘No hay quinto malo’. Ojos de Brujo, following their successful international tour, released the DVD with live concerts ‘Girando Barí 2005’, just like the flamenco chill band Chambao with ‘Chambao puro’ and singer El Barrio with ‘El Barrio en concierto’. Even single-show collective concerts have been released on DVD, such as the one with the title ‘Flamencos del siglo XXI’ offered by Dorantes, Diego Carrasco and the trio consisting of Jorge Pardo, Carles Benavent and Tino di Geraldo at Etnosur 2004. Also compiled on the DVD ‘Sabor flamenco’ are the main music videos by artists of the label BMG, like Niña Pastori, Ketama, Kiko Veneno and Radio Tarifa, among many others. Navajita Plateá and Manzanita complete the current offer of heterodox flamenco DVDs.

Films and documentaries

Flamenco cinema now sports great titles. Inescapable to anyone approaching this artform is ‘Flamenco’ by Carlos Saura, since it managed to gather the genre's top artists, letting them display their art nearly in private. It includes historic moments such as Fernanda de Utrera's soleá and the bulerías by Paquera de Jerez, as well as performances by stars such as Paco de Lucía and Joaquín Cortés. And all of it exposing the entire range of styles and formats. By the Aragonese filmmaker, but in collaboration with Antonio Gades, is the trilogy consisting of ‘Carmen’, El amor brujo’ and ‘Bodas de sangre’, responsible for flamenco's international boom in the eighties. Later on, he did the musical ‘Salomé’ with dancer Aida Gómez, and his latest project with flamenco will soon be released on DVD: ‘Iberia’, which includes performances by Sara Baras, Estrella Morente and Antonio Canales, among others. Also at the disposal of enthusiasts for a year now is the musical ‘Bodas de gloria’, with maestro Farruco and his grandson Farruquito.

Carmen Amaya. Frame de Los Tarantos

Another great film is ‘Los Tarantos’, where Carmen Amaya left her artistic testimony, as well as serving as a springboard for Antonio Gades. There were also other appearances by this mythical bailaora in movies such as ‘La hija de Juan Simón’. Along the same line of films of manners is ‘La copla andaluza’, with appearances by La Paquera de Jerez and Porrinas de Badajoz, among others. The genre of documentaries has set its sights on flamenco, with works like ‘Agujetas. Cantaor’ by Dominique Abel and ‘Inés, hermana mía’, which delve deeply into the personality of flamenco artists.

History archive

Nearly the best thing about audiovisuals is the chance it offers to explore flamenco history. Spanish public television (RTVE) has housed genuine treasures for forty years, since it has periodically had a weekly flamenco program on the air. The jewel is the series ‘Rito y geografía’ in its three facets: cante, baile and toque. The entire archive has been released on DVD. And the cante section is currently being re-released in DVD-book format, in four-volume box sets, with restored material and complementary information. There's no better way to learn from maestros of yesterday, to discover the origins of today's figures, to nostalgically contemplate how flamenco used to be lived in its main territories. Afterwards comes the series ‘Puro y Jondo’, also with fundamental names of cante, as well as ‘Flamenco en los archivos de RTVE’, with features on artists such as Camarón de la Isla and Fosforito recorded between the seventies and eighties. All the material from the TV station has been used for documentary tributes like ‘Paco Toronjo. La vida de un genio’. Fans are awaiting the release on DVD of later programs, nearly all of which were broadcast on late-night television.
