Fifty thousand people view the online premiere
of the show 'Inmigración' at Flamenco-world.com

Flamenco-world.com, November 20th, 2003

The online broadcast of the premiere of 'Inmigración' at Flamenco-world.com was an unprecedented success. Fifty thousand people all over the world watched the show on the night of Wednesday, November 19th, 2003, an audience similar to that which could fit in an Olympic stadium. The avalanche of viewers was such that it blocked the portal in the five minutes prior to the opening. When the curtain was raised, fifteen thousand people were simultaneously enjoying the show from places as different as the Bermudas, Holland, Argentina, England, Australia, the Philippines... and even Seville, although nearly half of the crowd connected from the United States. Flamenco-world.com and Taller Flamenco thus make their common dream come true of taking live flamenco to every corner on the globe.

It was five minutes to 9 p.m. (Spanish time) on Wednesday, November 19th, 2003 when thousands of people all over the world keyed in www.flamenco-world.com on their browser. They were 'waiting in line' to 'attend' the first flamenco premiere broadcast on the Internet, at the same time as the crowd that was packing Seville's Central Theater. Once the entrance was cleared, fifteen thousand computers worldwide were taking their seats and watching 'Inmigración', the show marking the début of the Ángeles Gabaldón Company. Thanks to the unlimited capacity, during the show more and more viewers joined, reaching a total audience of fifty thousand people.

Most of the connections came from the United States, specifically forty-five percent. The rest were spread out all over the world map. Flamenco, dance and culture enthusiasts in general from countries such as the Philippines, Brazil, Canada, Spain, Italy, Holland, Argentina and England, among many others, enjoyed this show which mixes art and social denunciation. Clear evidence of this are the dozens of e-mails received at Flamenco-world.com, which stress, above all, their gratitude to the project's organizers for "sharing Inmigración with us", as a viewer writes from Manila.

Two stories stand out in the collection of anecdotes of this first online flamenco premiere. On the one hand, that of a cancer-stricken enthusiast in the United States who enjoyed the show from the hospital. On the other hand, that of the family of English bailaora Nicolia Morris - a member of the Ángeles Gabaldón Company - who gathered in front of their computer to watch her brilliant performance... from London. It was a fabulous thrill for them.

The online broadcast of the premiere of 'Inmigración' was possible thanks to the collaboration of three companies: Flamenco-world.com, Taller Flamenco (the show's producer) and Ferca (Internet services provider). To them it means "a challenge and an achievement in the dissemination of flamenco. We've made the dream come true of being able to take the flamenco being created today to thousands of people who can't be at a specific place".
