The Sevillian bailaor, the 2005 National Dance Prize Winner, revives ‘Arena’ and ‘Tábula rasa’

The 2006 Festival Bienal de Sevilla: program / ticket sales

It had already become a tradition for Israel Galván to offer a premiere at Seville’s Bienal de Flamenco: ‘La Metamorfosis’ in 2000, ‘Galvánicas’ in 2002, ‘Arena’ in 2004... However, in this fourteenth edition of the Sevillian festival, the bailaor who won the 2005 National Dance Prize is going to be present another way, with a ‘retrospective’ of his work. At the Teatro Central, the festival revives ‘Arena’ on September 15th – a show which premiered at the previous edition of the festival at the Teatro Maestranza – and presents ‘Tábula rasa’, the bailaor’s latest daring creation. Tickets are already sold out.

Israel Galván is going to be one of the stars at Seville’s 2006 Bienal de Flamenco. The fourteenth edition of the Sevillian festival pays tribute to a bailaor whose career it has seen develop from when, as a rising young star, he won the Giraldillo del Baile in 1996, to the tremendous premiere of ‘Arena’ at the Teatro de la Maestranza in 2004, just before being awarded the National Dance Prize.

On September 15th, ‘Arena’ returns to the Bienal, but this time moving to the festival’s more alternative stage, the Teatro Central. ‘Arena’ is a show about the world of bullfighting and enjoys the collaborations of Enrique Morente, Diego Carrasco, Diego Amador and Miguel Poveda, plus the support of audiovisuals recorded for the occasion at the Maestranza Bullring (read review).

‘Tábula rasa’

Seville’s Bienal also wishes to display the artist’s latest creation, ‘Tábula rasa’ (read review). In this spectacle, which is the bailaor’s most recent work together with ‘La edad de oro’, he tackles the risk of silently dancing the echo of what is previously sung by Inés Bacán and played on the piano by Diego Amador. The show, which has already been seen at Flamenco Thursdays in Seville and Festival de Jerez 2006, will be able to be seen on September 17th, also at the Teatro Central. Israel Galván will appear again in the program of the Sevillian festival, but as a choreographer in ‘La Francesa’, a show starring bailaora Pastora Galván which is to premiere on September 16th at the Teatro Central.
