Following the international success of 'Mayte + Belén', the company
comprising Mayte Martín and Belén Maya launches a new creative adventure.
The cantaora and the bailaora will première 'Flamenco de
Cámara' -Chamber Flamenco- at Festival de Jerez 2003. The show, built along
an axis of tradition-renovation, brings together concepts such as sobriety, naturalness,
delicateness, simplicity and emotion. The show's music is the work of Juan Ramón
Caro and José Luis Montón - who also play guitar - with the exception
of the composition for Olvido Lanza's violin, which was written by Mayte Martín.

"With conviction in our hearts, we opted for a risky formula: sobriety,
naturalness, delicateness, and the simplicity of all that is carefully elaborated,
which springs from our deepest emotions and arouses deep emotions in others."
This statement of intention, written in Mayte Martín's own hand, captures
the essence of 'Flamenco de Cámara', the show which the Catalan cantaora
will co-present with bailaora Belén Maya on Saturday March 8th at
the Festival de Jerez 2003. 'Flamenco de Cámara', or Chamber Flamenco,
is defined as "the intimate world of two women who use a common language
to give free rein to their feelings."
The new show by the Compañía de Mayte Martín y Belén
Maya runs its course without pause for intervals, incorporating flamenco styles
such as soleá, tientos, cantiñas and tarantos, as
well as ida y vuelta styles like vidalita and guajira. This repertoire,
choreographed and interpreted by dancer Belén Maya with vocals by Mayte
Martín, is set to music provided by the duo's regular musical collaborators:
Juan Ramón Caro and José Luis Montón, responsible for both
writing and playing the music for guitar. Violinist Olvido Lanza will play compositions
written by the cantaora, and palmas will be supplied by the hands of Yolanda Alba
and Susana Medina. Add to this list Gloria Montesinos who takes care of lighting
design, and Marc Rigau in charge of designing the sound, together creating "the
intimate and concentrated space " necessary for the production.
In order that the show arrives in Jerez in a mature and fully rounded form,
the company will take 'Flamenco de Cámara' to various venues in Cataluña
this coming February. It will play at La Garriga (Friday 7th), Girona (Saturday
15th), Parets (Sunday 16th), La Seu d'Urgell (Thursday 20th), Torello (Friday
21st) and Vilasart de Dalt (Friday 28th).
Boleros
The seventh edition of the Jerez event is also the vehicle Mayte Martín
has chosen to set the stage for the presentation of her new album of boleros.
This will be her fourth disc, following 'Muy frágil' (Klndus Cultural,
1994), 'Free Boleros' (Klndus Cultural, 1996) - a live recording with Tete Montoliú
- and 'Querencia' (Virgin, 2002). The cantaora will present her new album
to the public on February 27th at the festival's Café Cantante, two weeks
after its scheduled release date.
