Mercedes Ruiz makes
her début as
a choreographer in ‘Gestos de mujer’
The
music by Santiago Lara is the common thread of the Jerez-born
bailaora's show
S.C., February 2005
Mercedes
Ruiz has decided to put herself to the test. The Jerez-born
bailaora débuts as a choreographer in her second solo
show. ‘Gestos de mujer’ is a show without a storyline,
conducted solely by the flamenco music composed by guitarist
Santiago Lara and by the young artist's dancing. Rondeña,
verdiales, martinete and romances fit into this show in which
“I try to express all the traits of a woman, making
use of the style of each variety: more freshness for the alegrías,
more restraint for the taranto...”. The show, which
premiered at the Maison de la Danse in Lyon (France) last
September, is to be presented at the Jerez Festival on Saturday,
March 5th, 2005.

Two years after ‘Dibujos en el aire’, Mercedes
Ruiz presents her company's new show at the Villamarta Theater.
‘Gestos de mujer’, like its predecessor, is a
show without a storyline, but in the words of the artist,
“this one is done with more awareness; it has a reason”.
And that reason is the music, specifically composed for the
occasion by Santiago Lara, one of Manolo Sanlúcar's
outstanding disciples.
Said compositions are performed live by guitarists Santiago
Lara and Daniel Méndez, cantaores Londro, El Pulga
and Mercedes Cortés, contrabass player Juanmi Guzmán
and percussionist Pedro Navarro. The show's repertoire includes
the rondeña and verdiales ‘Tu mirada’,
the alegrías ‘De la bahía’, the
tarantos ‘Ronda de San Telmo’ and the romance
‘Juana’, among other pieces.
With such a great variety of styles, Mercedes Ruiz is seeking
to express through her dancing “everything that can
be born of a woman: elegance, simplicity, strength”.
And for those qualities to stand out, the stage design opts
for restraint: “A no-frills lighting creation and staging,
to just the right degree. The stage is transformed from one
piece to the next, thus providing the sensation of pictures
without clashes, without strong contrasts in nuances”.
‘Gestos de mujer’ reaches the Jerez Festival
with several European cities already under its belt. It premiered
at Lyon's Maison de la Danse in September 2004, next being
performed in London, Suresnes and Nîmes.
