2006 JEREZ FLAMENCO FESTIVAL

The festival takes a breather. The limelight of Festival de Jerez 2006 was split between related stages during the day of Thursday, March 2nd while Teatro Villamarta prepares Sara Baras' show. Daniel Navarro took part in the ‘Los Novísimos’ Series for new talents with a baile performance in which he was backed by close to a dozen accompanists, among them, a real treat: cantaor Guadiana. However, he didn't manage to take advantage of so much company, which he used more to cover the ‘between-bailes’ than to establish interaction with his three numbers, two of which were bulerías and the other tientos-tangos. The following baile display was provided by Hiniesta Cortés at Sala La Compañía, backed by top-notch musicians such as cantaor David Lagos and guitarist Alfredo Lagos. Then, late night, it was cante's turn. Copla singer María José Santiago didn't catch the eye of enthusiasts in her adventure with cante jondo. Before a half-full Bodega de Los Apóstoles, she reeled off a classical repertoire including soleares, seguiriyas and malagueñas. (Text: S.C./ Photos: Daniel Muñoz).
