Rafaela
Carrasco once again
chooses Festival de Jerez to premiere her creation. At the
event’s eleventh edition, the Sevillian bailaora presents
‘Del amor y otras cosas’, a show directed by Teresa
Nieto, which as she explains, is “a journey through
the emotional states of a couple’s relationship”.
In the baile, she will star side by side with dancer Daniel
Doña. The music is taken care of by Pablo Suárez
on piano, José Luis López on cello, Ramiro Obedman
on flute and sax, Jesús Torres on guitar, plus Antonio
Campos and Miguel Ortega on cante. The show premieres on March
4th at the Teatro Villamarta.

‘Del amor y otras cosas’ covers five emotional
states: dependence, passion, routine, lack of affection and
memory. And in order to capture them, besides resorting to
baile and choreography, Rafaela Carrasco has resorted to stage
design and “a very special wardrobe”, both designed
by Elisa Sanz. “The concept is really modern”,
the artist explains.
And the thing is, as she has already shown in previous productions,
hers is not conventional flamenco. In baile, she feeds on
Daniel
Doña’s style, which feeds on Spanish ballet
and contemporary. And she lets on about herself that “I
do a bit of everything: I have moments of more traditional
flamenco, but nearly all of it is a more stylized baile style”.
Standing out on the team is the figure of contemporary dancer
and choreographer Teresa Nieto – founder of the Arrieritos
company-, who directs the show. And the group of artists includes
pianist Pablo Suárez, cellist José Luis López,
flutist and saxophonist Ramiro Obedman, and guitarist Jesús
Torres, who have composed the original score. Live, Miguel
Ortega and Antonio Campos will also be on cante.
Premiere at the Villamarta
The show premieres on March 4th at the Teatro Villamarta
in Jerez, a stage she is familiar with. In 2005 she premiered
‘Una mirada del flamenco’ there, in 2003 ‘La
música del cuerpo’ and took part in the 2004
edition as guest bailaora of the Mario Maya Company in ‘Un,
dos, tres, faaa’. Rafaela Carrasco is also a faculty
member of the courses at the Jerez festival, which she participates
in this year with a study of the garrotín.
