“A different Mercedes
Ruiz is going to come out.” The Jerez-born bailaora
affirms that in her new show ‘Mi último secreto’,
she is going to display “other facets and other
registers”. To take on that risk, she has Javier
Latorre as a choreography consultant. In addition to her
solos in styles like farruca and caracoles, she also moves
a pair of bailaoras around on stage. The music, as in
her previous show ‘Juncá’, is composed
by guitarist Santiago Lara. And in matters of cante, she
has the voices of David Lagos and El Londro. The show
premieres at the Teatro Villamarta on March 11th, 2009,
in the setting of the 13th Festival de Jerez.

Mercedes Ruiz is now putting the finishing
touches on the premiere of a new solo show. ‘Mi
último secreto’, which will be seen for the
first time at Festival de Jerez 2009, is, in the bailaora’s
view, a show in which “I risk more”. Compared
to her previous show ‘Juncá’ - which
was presented in the 2007 edition -, she affirms that
“a different Mercedes Ruiz” will be seen,
since she has set herself the goal of “bringing
out new things in my baile”.

She sets aside the styles she is most
acquainted with and lays stakes on other styles “such
as farruca, caracoles, bulería por soleá
and granaína”. In addition to these solos,
she does a seguiriya, which she performs together with
bailaoras Carmen Herrera and Vanesa Reyes, “and
a rondeña which the two of them dance”. In
order to polish the choreography work, she has had the
consulting of renowned choreographer Javier
Latorre, who she worked with last year in the show
‘¡Viva
Jerez!’.
Music by Santiago Lara
As in ‘Juncá’, the
music has been composed by Jerez-born guitarist Santiago
Lara, who will try to capture the change the bailaora
is seeking in the soundtrack. Although it is not a sure
thing yet, he might add some string arrangements to his
toque. There are lyrics of his in the show, but also by
David
Lagos, who forms a cantaor duo here with El Londro.
And they are joined by percussion and clapping. Simplicity
prevails in the staging, since “the baile is what’s
going to be eye-catching”, the star adds.
