Belén Maya has been complaining for years
about the isolation of flamenco dancers. And she wants to
break that trend in her new show ‘Bailes alegres para
personas tristes’, which premieres on March 8th at
Festival de Jerez 2010. She has already found an accomplice
to form a duo with: Olga Pericet. Together with her, she
intends to make her aim materialize of “bridging the
communication gap between flamenco creators”. The
idea materializes in duality games between the two bailaoras,
two guitarists and the cantaores, stars of a show with stage
directing by Juan Carlos Lérida and music directing
by David Montero.

“We flamenco dancers are like islands;
each one working in his own territory, isolated and alone,
without sharing anything with others”. ‘Bailes
alegres para personas tristes’ (‘Lively Dances
for Sad People’) stems from that reflection by Belén
Maya. Tired of the individualism prevailing in flamenco
dancing, she lays stakes on dialoguing with other colleagues.
And in this case it’s Córdoba-born bailaora
Olga Pericet, an instructor at the festival who has been
seen here together with Marcos Flores and Manuel Liñán
in the show ‘En clave’ (2007).
The show, with stage directing by Juan
Carlos Lérida and music directing by David Montero,
is “a series of musical and/or dance numbers where
one tries to show the direct union between guitarist and
bailaora”. The musicians called on to be a part of
that complex are guitarists Javier Patino and Antonia Jiménez,
and cantaores Miguel Ortega, Jesús Corbacho and Miguel
Rosendo. And established between them is “a game of
duos: bailaora-guitarist, two bailaoras before two guitarists,
two bailaoras before two cantaoras(es), also women, two
guitarists trying to create a common musical space and two
bailaoras trying to find a space where their experiences
get together to create something new”, the synopsis
explains.
Belén and Jerez
But it isn’t the first time that
Belén Maya has put on collaborative projects at Festival
de Jerez. Her two shows side by side with cantaora Mayte
Martín were much-talked-about: ‘Mayte + Belén’
(2002) and ‘Flamenco de cámara’ (2003).
Together with Rafaela Carrasco, she presented the risky
show ‘Fuera de los límites’ in the 2005
edition. Moreover, she has collaborated with Mario Maya
on several occasions. One of them was in the show ‘Un,
dos, tres, faaa’, another in the gala ‘Mujeres’
which she starred in together with Rocío Molina and
Merche Esmeralda; and most recently, posthumously, in the
tribute to the bailaor and choreographer which she directed
as the closing show in the last edition.
