La
Farruca assures us that ‘Homenaje a los grandes’
will be her last show. The Sevillian bailaora is determined
to quit “the world of tours and constant performances”.
But first, she wants to bid farewell in grand fashion. And
she will do so with this new show which is to premiere at
Festival de Jerez 2011 on February 26th. At the Teatro Villamarta
in the Cádiz-area town she will perform this show,
which evokes the flamenco figures she considers to be her
references: Carmen Amaya, Farruco,
Camarón, Manolo Caracol and Lola Flores… And
to do so, she will be accompanied by artists like Pedro
el Granaíno, cantaoras Encarna Anillo and Mara Rey,
guitars, piano and the baile of her youngest son, El Carpeta.
The eldest of her children, Farruquito, assists her in this
project by signing the stage design and part of the musical
score.

a los grandes' |

“To recall every ancestor, every
phenomenon of nature, I’d have to be a god…
The ones I’m going to recall are the ones that were
in my heart, and the ones from which I believe I can get
something across”. With these words, La Farruca explains
what the essence is of her new show ‘Homenaje a los
grandes’. According to the synopsis, “it’s
as if I were treading the footprints which the greatest
ones left behind. Following the same route, but backwards.
A journey to the heart of jondo art and to its era of greatest
splendor. Style by style, she re-encounters them and shows
them respect: Carmen Amaya, Niño Ricardo, Arturo
Pavón, Farruco, La Perla, Manolo Caracol and Lola
Flores, Camarón…”.
Her declared affection for cante leads
her to share the show’s spotlight with cantaor Pedro
el Granaíno, a regular in her family’s shows.
And his presence will be stressed in the zambra with which
she seeks to evoke “the fiery chemistry there was
between Lola Flores and Manolo
Caracol. The music and lyrics for this piece have been
written by her son Farruquito, who is also the author of
the stage design. Other outstanding numbers will be the
alegrías which, danced wearing trousers, will lead
her to Carmen
Amaya. And with the soleá, her mark of identity,
she will pay tribute to her father, the mythical Farruco.
The premiere will be in the setting of
Festival de Jerez 2011, an event which regularly requires
her presence. The last time the bailaora was on the bill
was last year, when she presented a small-scale recital
at the Sala Paúl. In the 2007 edition she deployed
her entire arsenal at the Teatro Villamarta, presenting
the show ‘Gitanas’,
in which she conversed with Carmelilla Montoya, Angelita
Vargas, Pilar la Faraona and Juana la del Revuelo as guest
artists.
