Mercedes
Ruiz will be launching her new project at Seville's Festival
Bienal this year. The bailaora from Jerez presents ‘Juncá’
at Teatro Alameda on 24th and 25th September. According to
the artist, this is a “sincere tribute to Jerez, that
inexhaustible fountain of the flamenco arts”. And, specifically,
she's chosen her birthplace: the barrio de San Miguel, “heartland
of great artists, which nurtured the cante of Manuel Torre
and Antonio Chacón, the towering strength of La Faraona,
the personification of compás of La Paquera and an
endless list of other great artists”.
She pays tribute to them all in the repertoire of this new
show, which follows ‘Dibujos en el aire’ and ‘Gestos
de mujer’. The bailaora's new project begins with ‘Arrancarse’,
a prolog por bulerías which sets the tone in true Jerez
style. It continues with old forge songs ‘A semilla
flamenca’, Chacón's malagueña and the
soleá por bulería ‘La Plazuela’.
Mercedes Ruiz, whose solo career took off after winning an
award at the 2002 Festival Bienal de Sevilla, pays tribute,
too, to the artist Lola Flores - also born in San Miguel -
with the zambra ‘A La Faraona’. The bailaora squeezes
all of Jerez's flamenco legacy into a solo por soleá
entitled ‘Herencia de la tierra’. And she rounds
off this third solo show with ‘Cerrín Malacachín’.
Music and cante
In this show the bailaora takes the reins as both artistic
director and choreographer, and has included pieces for three
bailaores. The music is taken care of by guitarist Santiago
Lara, who accompanies the cante of Jesús
Méndez, Londro and David Palomar on stage. The
group also includes pianist Jesús Lavilla and percussionist
Perico Navarro. The new show has lighting designed by Francis
Mannaert, who previously worked with bailaor Andrés
Marín, and once again the wardrobe is designed by Fernando
Ligero
