‘SIMOF 2007’ FLAMENCO FASHION SHOW. TRENDS GUIDE

Renewed flamenco dresses

Susana Muñoz Bolaños. Seville, February 2007

The fusion between avant-garde and classicism was the prevailing note of the more than 30 shows and 1,000 designs which filled up the catwalk of Simof 2007. And the thing is that it’s in the flamenco dress where the latest trends in fashion come together, with respect for the roots of the regional dress. Just to give a few brushstrokes, here are some ideas.

DESIGNS There are some for every moment of the day, from morning to night, with the afternoon in between. Entire dresses or two pieces consisting of blouses and skirts, complemented with bullfighter-style jackets. There are also very feminine rociero batas and the reinterpretation of the traditional short male costume.
WAISTS The trend to tighten the waist continues to be on the rise because it accentuates female forms and visually lengthens the figure. Also presented are silhouettes tailored halfway down the thigh, at which point voluminous ruffles appear and an elaborate hang in cascades.
NECKLINES The V- and heart-shaped necklines, very daring. Especially audacious cuts, in which there is no shortage of dizzying necklines and bare backs. Also abounding are bare shoulders and necklines tied around the neck. Also those which leave the collarbone exposed and balance the final stylism.
SLEEVES They are very varied in presentation: bulky, very tight, etc. They are also presented very long and tight, when they do not shine for their absence, or to the elbow, very tight and stylish. And of course, wide sleeves, with a lot of shirrs and exquisitely elaborated.
FABRICS There’s room for everything, from the exclusive, comfortable and quality, such as silk, plumetis and tulle – even in the shawls - to the traditional crochet with garbadine, silk, satin, lamé and muslin. Also natural fabrics, such as cotton, piqués or perforations, with the luxury and the distinction of others with more festive attire, such as wild silks. There is no shortage of denim, perforated fabrics as well as embroidered lace and striped dresses and jackets. And also the daring mixtures of poplin, sateen, printed crêpe, string, silk and lace, even leather. Much more audacious is the use of lycra, padding and applications of sequins. Appearing once again are fabrics with a thousand stripes, gingham and hand-dyed cambric. Among the strangest ones, those presented by Melisa Lozano, who used plastic bubble-wrap to simulate sea foam, shells and sand from the beach and fishing net and corks to elaborate a flamenco dress.
RUFFLES Very “raised” ruffles are proposed thanks to new techniques in dressmaking. Also beautiful ones with layers and finished with embroidered strips, in the purest ’70s style. Moreover, asymmetrical ruffles or pleated, bulky, shirred or sheer. Others are pleated or superimposed, discreet and elegant, but which contribute a lot of body and a becoming, moderate volume.
COLORS The palette of colors is infinite. The pastels, like sky blue or beige. Black and white binomials, without losing sight of brown, a tone of the season, but also vermilion, turquoise, choral, violet, purple, pumpkin, etc. The entire range of green – mint, pistachio, water, moss and emerald - join the strength and daring of gold. Of course, timeless red is more than present, besides black and white.
POLKA DOTS Size no longer matters and there are those of different styles and sizes, not just the small, medium and traditional ones, but also cookie-size ones and others similar to a giant cookie.
COMPLEMENTS Gold, with great doses of fantasy and luxury, and in silver, very big and colorful. The personalized earrings, back combs, bracelets and pendants, like those by Luchi Cabrera, or those by Melisa Lozano, made from a silk ribbon matching the fabrics of the dresses join purses, belts, matching wallets, as well as sashes, rings, breastpins, shawls and stoles. The flowers, together with glass back combs. Also very spectacular, made in imitation glass or diamond, but light and comfortable, like the long necklaces of many turns and the very large rings and bracelets. Dyed nacre is present once again in creations such as those by Aurora Gaviño. The flowers, large and on any part of the head, fundamentally next to the neck. As a novelty, maxi-necklaces and shawls grasping the waist. Also those contributed by Juana Martín, large and daring and with a lot of applications of semi-precious stones and details of color. Finally, the flamenco earrings and short combs and exaggerated back combs by Cañavate. As far as shoes go, the show laid its stakes on dress shoes and sandals with dizzying heels, modern versions of the traditional boots, and for flamenco dancing, Begoña Cervera displayed her new collection, with original embroidered finishes, combinations of color in geometric shapes and perforated polka dots.
SHAWLS The craftsmanship of the shawls presented at Simof is filled by the creations of such renowned names as those of Ángeles Espinar, full of sensuality, flirtatiousness and renewed classicism. Large cigarette-girl-style flowers are stuck to natural silk and crêpe, as well as vegetable and animal motifs, such as birds and fig leaves, combined with elements of Oriental iconography. The range of colors is very broad, highlighted by intense tones and traditional beiges and blacks. Elsewhere, Charo Vara and Rosario Solís propose a collection of small shawls embroidered in natural silk tulle and in natural silk and silk crêpe. The motifs are floral and consist of irises, poppies and daisies. As a novelty, shawls tied to the waist. The fringes, some of the sewn to the necklines, many don’t even appear in the designs.
