SPECIAL FEATURE. SIMOF 2008 FLAMENCO FASHION SHOW

2008 Guide to Flamenco Trends

Susana Muñoz Bolaños. Seville, February 2008

DESIGNS There’s a selection for every moment of the day: morning, afternoon, evening and night. The designs run from the conventional flamenco dress to noble fabrics imbued with luxury and entertainment. They always dress women with a high dose of sensuality, with very feminine, tight-fitting cuts. Dresses with different lengths, shirtwaist, one-pieces with biases, cut to the waist, but also with two pieces, consisting of blouses or shirts with turned-up necks and skirts or trousers, complemented with short vests and short jackets of every style. Moreover, different versions of the traditional batas rocieras, very updated and feminine, and the reinterpretation of the traditional short male outfit, absolutely feminized.
WAISTS The tendency to adjust the waists to the woman’s body provides a sensual, elegant silhouette which optically lengthens the feminine figure. There are also cuts below the bust and skirts with high waists which give the designs freshness, besides dresses tailored to the knee. Cascades of ruffles rise and fall in an exorbitant race to surround the woman’s body, generating a great many combinations.
FABRICS The textures vary between raincoat fabric, mikado and bambula gauze, until silk muslin, sunflower satin, silk stitch, laces and tulle. Without losing sight of fabrics embroidered in silk string or the incorporation of party fabrics, like natural silk fabrics or silk satins and guipures. The use is maintained of noble fabrics such as satin, silk, gauze, poplin, or glossy cotton. Other fabrics are added, like pierced ones and laces. As a colorful note, the use of new fabrics such as lycras with satin, tulles, sequins.
RUFFLES Very sheer ruffles are proposed for dresses with low waists, creating great volume which is comfortable and easy to wear due to its slight weight. There are also those which are gathered and decorating the body or ‘canasteros’. The ones stand out which are asymmetrical, layered, on the straight or puffed, besides those reaching the ankle or half-leg length. There are also ones with great volume or pleated.
COLORS The palette of colors knows no bounds: the joy of pure colors combined with the most traditional, timeless ones: red, black and white. Pastel tones unite with others of great strength, such as purples, garnets or greens, as well as the entire range of earth tones and bold yellows and oranges. Also present is water blue and sky tones, without forgetting the original patterns.
NECKLINES Very pronounced, daring V-necks stand out. Also very generous. Without forgetting necklines at the back, which they end up baring in an exercise in genuine sensuality.
MANGAS A great variety of sleeves is presented with ruffles or puffed, very sheer, and with three rows of ruffles. Others, very original. There are long ones, more suitable for evening dresses, but also very short ones and/or tight-fitting ones. The introduction of the corsair sleeve stands out.
POLKA DOTS They seem to have moved out of the foreground, but there are some which stand out due to their size. In a curious mixture, together with large polka dots, gauzes shine with leopard patterns and imitations of animal skins or superimposed roses. Ángeles Verano combines small ones with stripes or sketches them by hand in circular shapes and Creaciones MariCruz introduces polka-dot tulle as a novelty.
COMPLEMENTS Silver is the bet for armlets, bracelets and glass ring bracelets with lively colors. Also for flowers, back combs, earrings, necklaces and bracelets. Elements more than outstanding are the purses, shoes, shawl and small shawls matching the dresses, besides large complements in silver with lively colors and geometric shapes. Complements in bronze, silver and old gold are back, inspired by the traditional style of the copla. Ethnic necklaces are added and large back combs are recovered. Coming back strong is the fan in a wide range of colors, matching hand-painted shawls, and earrings in metal and wood. Also standing out are adornments of pearls, Swaroski crystal, flowers and laces, and especially, an original line in leather. The flowers are spread out all over the body. Also on the head, with situations sometimes impossible to define. Now then, always open roses, preferably red and white. In footwear, ballroom shoes and sandals prevail, but esparto shoes continue, modernized and in every color.
MANTILLAS, SHAWLS AND SMALL SHAWLS The craftsmanship in the shawls is evident year after year. The new proposal is surprising once again due to the skill of its creations, in a bet on a popular collection of manners. The shawls and mantillas stand out for the color and the large flower designs. Their designs are defined with an oriental style belonging to the era. Faithful to her style, Lina considers small shawls and shawls to be essential complements.

ADORNMENTS AND RECOVERD COMBINATIONS Back is guipure, embroidered straps, berry-shaped tassels, fringes and bobbin laces with a lot of strength. In a daring bet, Mari Carmen Cruz lays stakes on the use of buttons on the dresses, while Loli Vera takes back up the use of fringes all over the body or sewn to the neckline and also the adornments of passementeries and colored laces.
