Films, didactics and concerts. The three audiovisual variants have an equal share on the TOP 10 DVD list. The top two positions are held by filmmaker Carlos Saura with his acclaimed movies ‘Sevillanas’ (1) - which had never been available in digital format - and the re-release of ‘Flamenco’ (2), which proves the importance of these documents as the years go by. Also awakening interest in aficionados this year is the documentary by German director Michael Meert about the Habichuela family, entitled ‘Herencia flamenca’.

The usefulness of audiovisuals for learning and practicing baile and guitar techniques has materialized in 2008 in the success of products such as ‘El zapateado. Método didáctico’ (3) by Manuel Salado, the course ‘Guitarra Flamenca’ (4) by styles by prestigious Sevillian guitarist Manolo Franco; and ‘Guitarra flamenca en 48 clases’ (6) by José Manuel Montoya, who had already been a correspondence course instructor with previous titles like ‘Bulerías paso a paso’. Far from the hyper-specialization of these products is the curious audiovisual encyclopedia ‘Flamenco de la A a la Z’ (8), in which concepts belonging to flamenco - including the styles - are explained with footage recorded live.

The top-selling live flamenco DVD in 2008 was ‘Farruquito y familia’ (5), a live recital by the Sevillian bailaor recorded at the Nîmes Flamenco Festival, including appearances by other bailaores in the family such as La Farruca, Pilar la Faraona and Farru. Flamenco dancing by young bailaores is also featured on the DVD ‘Living flamenco’ (9), starring a brilliant threesome: Domingo Ortega, Andrés Peña and Rafael Campallo. And closing the ranking is the concert ‘Córdoba... en el tiempo’ (10) by guitarist José Antonio Rodríguez, whose guitar isn’t just to listen to, but also to watch interacting on stage together with other instruments and some touches of dancing.
