Don Antonio Chacón

Record: "1913-1927: La cumbre de un maestro"
(1913 - 1927: A master´s crowning achievement )

Guitarra: Ramón Montoya

Don Antonio Chacón (1869-1929) is regarded as one of the most influential links between the great cantaores of the 19th century, whose direct heir he is, and the best flamenco singers of this century, who draw in no small measure upon his magisterial art.

Why was Don Antonio Chacón called "God", "Master", "Monster", "Genius"? Because he could sing any style, and his voice was exceptional. He was a serious researcher of "cante", and his gentle but strong personality, along with his very humble upbringing, made him a living legend.

By the turn of the century, Chacón, having met singers like Silverio Franconetti, Curro Dulce and Enrique "El Mellizo", attained his creative maturity and glory, just as the record industry was making its first inroads in Spain.

The phonograph records he left were recorded in 1909, 1913, 1927 and 1928. Unfortunately, his first recordings have been lost or are technically very imperfect. This CD contains most of his 1913 and 1927 recordings and can be said to be the crowning achievement of his recorded output. Now, with the latest digital technology for restoring old recordings, we have a better idea of his historic legacy

The cd booklet includes English translations of the lyrics.

This is the lyric of a "Minera". All the songs of this "palo" speak about the everyday life and sufferings of the spanish miners of the last century :

Ay, ay, el corazón,
el corazón se me parte
cuando pienso en tus partidas
y cuando te tengo delante,
todos los males se me olvidan,
ay, y tengo de perdonarte.

Ay, qué madrugá
madrugar y trabajar,
subir y bajar la cuesta,
y a mí me dan poco jomal,
y esto no me tiene cuenta,
ay, que yo a la mina no voy más.

My heart...
My heart is broken
When I think of the times you're away from me
Yet when I have you before me
I forget every pain
And I have to forgive you.

What an early morning
To get up early and go to work,
To go up and down the steep road
All for a small wage.
This is not good for me,
So I'll go down to the mine no more.
