Another First for the Flamenco Ballet Los Tarantos:
US Debut at New York City Center February 20-23
by Ysabel de la Rosa
If there were a Flamenco category in the Guinness Book of World Records, Los
Tarantos might well be the Flamenco ballet with the most firsts to its credit.
It was the first full-length ballet choreographed by Felipe Sánchez,
former primer bailarín and current choreography maestro with the Ballet
Nacional de España, and the first ballet score composed by Paco de Lucía.
For the first time in Flamenco history, dancers wore cream-colored linen suits,
and the male protagonist danced without a shirt. Some of the Ballet Nacional’s
most famous performers had their first solos in Los Tarantos, including
Antonio Márquez, Aída Gómez, and Joaquín Cortes. Now
it’s time for another first: The Ballet Nacional will bring Los Tarantos
to the US for the first time in a performance at New York’s City Center, February
20-23, 1998.
