“I WANT TO DEDICATE THIS SHOW TO SOMEONE WHO IS VERY
DEAR TO ME AND WHO WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY HEART, ANTONIO REYES ‘EL MONO’, MY GRANDFATHER”.
Joaquín Cortés
Pasión Gitana (Gipsy Passion) is a dazzling explosion
of flamenco music and dance, a tribute to the gipsy race and culture, a unique,
unequalled kaleidoscope of sounds and movement, with a strong vocation of future
and modernity. The show features together with Joaquín Cortés, such
grand artists as Cristóbal Reyes, as well as a corps de ballet of fourteen
dancers and a set of fourteen musicians.
All parts of the show are bound by the gipsy way of
feeling. All through Pasión Gitana we can see their deep beliefs, the essence
of their traditions, the intensity of their myths, through a number of dances
where flamenco rises from the very roots up to the highest branches, always from
the heart and with a new spirit. Bulerías, soleá, seguiriyas, tangos
follow one another so as to offer a bright, gleaming flamenco fiesta.
Pasión Gitana has now been enjoyed by over one
million people all over the world, being unanimously and enthusiastically accepted
by quite different audiences at various theatres and auditoriums such as the Barcelona
Palau de la Música Catalana, usually closed to flamenco; the legendary
London Royal Albert Hall which has offered fourteen shows with full house; the
New York Radio City Music Hall, and the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles,
Joaquín Cortés and his party have also given performances at mass
venues such as the Luna Park in Buenos Aires, the Munich Olympic Stadium, Las
Ventas Bull Ring in Madrid, the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona and the Poliedro
in Caracas. During his last tour around Latin America, Joaquín Cortés
danced at the Ipanema Beach before nearly 30,000 people.
In 1998 Pasión Gitana was presented at the Sydney
Festival (Australia), in Tokyo (Japan), in Canada and New York. In July of this
year the Gipsy Passion Band gave a concert at the Montreaux Festival with the
special collaboration of Estrella Morente and Antonio Carbonell.
Pasión Gitana will be visiting Germany in October,
Japan in November and Spain in December.
