Interview with Joaquín
Cortés, bailaor
"I am anti-critic, one shouldn't dance
for the critics but for the people and for oneself"
Flamenco-world.com. Madrid, November 2003
The next words have been written in the press to define
your dancing : "Reform, advancement, rupture, experimentation, opening, fusion"
: Which one would chose to define your concept of dance?
Advancement, experimentation, fusion.
About dance, what aspects improve (or are worse) as
you get older?
Little is lost, possibly freshness but you gain a lot, such as maturity, wisdom
and experience.
Lots of very "popular" flamenco artists,
have not been able to make a living of their art, Is this changing?
Yes, of course, the new generations have other professional ethics.
Your love for cinema and acting is well known, How are you approximating
to it?
I love the cinema, it's another way of seeing art, there is still a lot to
be developed with flamenco in the movies.
What titles of flamenco have you been listening to these days?
Navajita Platea, Barberia del Sur, Nina Pastori, Chonchi, Manzanita, Raimundo
Amador...
How should you dance to win the favor of the flamenco press?
I am anti-critic, one shouldn't dance for the critics but for the people and
for oneself.
Some words about:
Diego Carrasco: Born talent.
Ramón Porrina, Bandolero y Chaboli: Freshness, talent and youth.
Estrella Morente: Genius.
Enrique Morente: A great man of flamenco.
What s best and worst about fame?
The best: To have the power to communicate and transmit your art.
The worst: When the media violates your intimacy.
