SOUL

After traveling the globe for five years with his
show Pasión Gitana, in addition to having danced live for over one million
people, Joaquín Cortés returned to the stage with 'Soul'. In this
show of music and dance which premiered in Barcelona's Teatro Tívoli in
October of 2000, Giorgio Armani continued to be in charge of the wardrobe, Jesús
Bola, Diego Carrasco and Juan Parrilla of the music, and Peter Lindberg and Andrew
Douglas of the image.
As the title suggests, Soul is a show with a universal
outlook, or soul, open to the influence of other kinds of music equally profound
such as gospel, classical and the traditional Cuban beat. Live music carries us
from the Mozart era to Chicago of the 1930's, never losing the flamenco essence
of martinetes, tarantos, bulerias seguiriyas, tangos... Joaquín Cortés
dares to cross influences, fuse and mix, never afraid of losing sight of who he
is for having drawn from other sources.
Soul has delighted international audiences at places
such as London's Sadler's Wells, in Beijing, Beirut, Hamburg, Athens, Lisbon,
Tokyo and Osaka. Not to mention Spanish cities such as Valencia, Málaga
or Castellón, in addition to benefit performances such as at the World
Heart Day gala celebrated in Barcelona's Teatro Liceu in September, 2000. In Latin
America alone, Joaquín Cortés reached up to 25,000 spectators, an
amount that was surpassed during the following season.
