What is ayeo?
Ayeo is a section of the cante introduction which helps the
cantaor to get in key and warm up his throat.
Javier Sáramo, Mexico
Ayeo is an introduction made by the cantaor before the cante
begins. ‘Ayeo’ comes from the exclamation ‘ay’,
which is prolonged wordless weeping made by the cantaor, which
adds a tragic, grieved, dramatic nature to the cante.
Sheba D. Bergman, Israel
Ayeo is the way the cantaor has to warm up and moreover to
suggest the depth or the cadence of the style he is going
to perform.
