What is Cante?

- Cante is the oral expression of flamenco feelings. It is the most basic and most primitive element of flamenco, older than the guitar and the dancing.
Asime C. Özözer, Turkey

- Cante is the whole of musical compositions which appeared in the 18th century as a result of the mixture of styles of music and folklore that there were in Andalusia.
Ana Díaz, Spain

- Cante is one of the elements of the wonderful triad making up flamenco art, along with guitar and dancing. It is the oldest expression, and in fact, many flamenco styles are only for cante. It is the voice which conveys to us solemnity, grief and depth; the history and feeling of a culture. For those of us who are not Andalusian, it is the most difficult thing to understand with the intellect, but it reaches us through its approach to the senses.
Ana, Uruguay

- Cante is not so much song, as weeping coming from the soul, from what is true. Cante is the expression of the human condition existing inside the Andalusian people.
Jim Morris, England

- Cante is the soul complaining.
Marcos, Spain
