What is marcaje?
In flamenco, the term marcaje is characteristic of baile,
for being performed essentially by the bailaor or bailaora,
during cante. It is a key moment in baile, since it is the
part situated between the bailaor's entrance on stage and
the performance of the escobilla (heel tapping). The performance
is technically easy, unlike the heel tapping, consisting of
marking the time with the soles of the feet. The arms usually
accompany the steps, shaping harmonious movements that adapt
to the tempo. The peculiarity of marcajes is that they are
basic steps accompanying the lyrics, therefore not requiring
much volume in order not to disturb the cante. Marcajes can
be carried out two different ways: moving in a given direction
or remaining in one place.
Davy Armengaud Fructuoso, France
Marcaje is choreographic movements performed during cante.
Marcajes are used for the bailaor to be able to feel the music
and to get ready to perform more technically-challenging movements.
Meanwhile, the cantaor keeps on ‘shining’ in his
art.
Vanessa, Brazil
Marcaje refers to the marking of the rhythm and the accents.
In the case of the dancer marks the accents during a letra,
also marcaje can be used as an introduction to a dance, song
or guitar solo.
