What is Ole?
The highest compliment in flamenco, given by everyone or anyone who is participating,
weather it be cante, baile or guitarra.
Celina Porter, United States
Ole is derived from the Arabic word Allah which means God. We say ole when
we see something that is beyond words or when we hear a rhythm that is close to
perfection. It is a way of invoking the creator, of expressing admiration, and
of asserting our presence and participation as listeners.
Sabine el Chamaa, Lebanon
Ole, when used to express of depth of feeling or enthusiasm, is the most primitive
and beautiful form of communication between one who listens and the one who sings,
between one who watches and the one who dances, between one who provides the perpetual
handclapping and the one who plays guitar, between one who's been thrilled and
the one who thrilled them. Ole is a cry of encouragement which is pure emotion.
Juan, Spain
