What is Quejío?
Quejío is a way of singing, pronouncing a deep, prolonged "ay",
which is included in flamenco song, adding intensity and character to cante. Dramatic,
deep and distant, they resound like a cry of pain and express the truest essence
of flamenco: inside grief communicated in artistic form.
Corinna, Italy
Quejío goes beyond roulades, embellishments and vocal turns. Quejío
appears when a cantaor reveals his traits and complains singing, that is, when
he breaks his throat and sings from the heart.
Jesús David García, Spain
Quejío is a stylized form of crying out; it is the origin and the norm
of cante flamenco.
