What is rasguear / rasgueo?
Rasgueo is a right-hand guitar technique consisting of spreading
out all of the fingers one after the other on the strings.
There are many types of strumming, standing out among which
is the "redondo", done with the thumb as well, and
the "volátil", which doesn't require spreading
out the fingers but rather contact of the entire hand, moving
up and down.
Jesús Serrano Tirado, Spain
Rasgueo is a right-hand technique used by guitarists. Ring
finger, middle finger, and index finger all individually strum
across a number of strings, so rapidly and closely followed
by one another that the individual strokes can hardly be distinguished
by the listener, but it creates a full, intense, rough chord
sound that, when accompanying dance, is often used to underline
remates, llamadas and desplantes of the dancer.
Tina Castillo Autie, Holland
Rasgueo are the various ways in which a flamenco guitarist
strums the guitar. These are done with the back of the nails
of the right hand (also by the front of the index finger on
upstrokes,) and can be almost any finger combination, depending
on the rhythm and accent required. There are several well
known variations used for 2, 3, 4 & 5 stroke rasgueo.
However, there are no hard and fast rules as to which type
should be used and choice of rasgueo are left to the guitarist.
