What is Toque?
El toque is the art of the flamenco guitar. To be a true master a person must
be able to accompany a singer or a dancer, providing them with the support to
convey their deep emotions. A guitarist should also be an accomplished soloist,
well versed in the traditional dance forms yet willing to experiment. The ultimate
example - without any doubt - is Paco de Lucía! He has proven that he can
provoke the best from a singer and also convey incredible emotion as a solo guitarist.
Christopher Gotzen-Berg (the United States)
Toque originates as the accompaniment to cante and dancing. In the early 20th
century, several maestros begin the way which culminates with Paco de Lucía:
from being a peripheral figure, toque turns into a central figure. From that moment
on, flamenco's center of gravity moves from cante to toque. It is through toque
that harmonic enrichment comes, it is through toque that flamenco bewitches non-Andalusians,
it is through toque that in Andalusians duende gains strength hitherto unknown.
It is through toque that flamenco lives.
Rubén Altuna (France)
Toque is the art of interpreting cante flamenco and its feeling by means of
the guitar.
Daniel Brenes (Costa Rica)
When the heart has something to say, it needs an outlet to express itself.
Some cry, others sing and those who are speechless play the guitar so that others
cry and sing.
