What is zambomba?
Zambomba is a Christmas party in which flamenco Christmas
carols are sung.
Raquel, Spain
The zambomba is an Andalusian Christmas celebration. Of a
religious and worldly nature, it is based on compositions
of popular lyrical poetry and flamenco for solo or choral
voice accompanied by the zambomba. This instrument is made
from an earthenware pot with its mouth covered by a skin pierced
in the middle by a reed which, when rubbed between your hands,
gives off a rough sound.
Gianni Sinigaglia
The zambomba is a Christmas gathering of people in the shape
of a circle (relatives, neighbors, friends) that sings typical
flamenco Christmas carols. Its name comes from the typical
Christmas instrument called the zambomba, which marks the
beat. The zambomba appears mainly in Jerez de la Frontera
(Cádiz) where it is said to have originated, but in
time it has spread to other Andalusian towns.
