INTERVIEW WITH POTITO
-
If you had to choose one song off your latest record “Mía pa’ los restos”, which one would it be?
It is hard to choose; I don't know, perhaps “La niña del canastero.”
- Is it harder to sing in the studio?
For me, it isn't harder to sing in the studio than live. Its different, but not more difficult.
- A couple of lines of a verse that you always like singing:
“...tu me los diñabas, caramelito de tu boca...”
- How do you judge the level of flamenco singing today?.
A lot of new people have appeared with a real desire to do good things. I believe we are living a wonderful moment for flamenco and that it will bear fruit.
- Is the figure of Camarón overly present in the new singers?
Camarón left a big heritage and we young singers have to feed off of it, How few geniuses there are like Camarón!
- You have worked on several occasions with the best musicians in flamenco. With which non flamenco musicians would you like to work with?
I don't know. There are only two types of musicians and music: what you can relate to and what you can't. I like to work with whoever I like.
- A young singer from Madrid, who doesn't belong to a flamenco family, has won the Festival de Cante de La Unión. Do you think that for this singer it will be harder to get performance bookings and to become known than for somebody who belongs to a family involved in flamenco?
The world is completely crazy, no one knows who can be sucessful. Its better to be born into cante because then it is absorbed from childhood. Its not the same thing to like cante as to be born into cante.
- Can “cante” be as popular internationally as flamenco guitar and dance?
But of course. Internationally flamenco is right there and will never cease to be. But I don't really know why in flamenco dance generates the most interest, then guitar, and finally cante.
- Does the public resist the evolution of artists too much?
I don't know about that, it is the public who know and say when they do or don't accept this evolution.
- You started to be known as a child prodigy. Do you believe that the aficionados are familiar with your most recent recordings?
Of course the initial impression from the first recording is the biggest. Then people already know where you are coming from.
- What music do you like to listen to?
Besides flamenco, I like salsa a lot. I also listen to jazz, blues...a little bit of everything.
- What would you have wanted to do if you hadn't become a singer?
Play soccer/football as a center forward like Raúl.
- Some remarks about the following artists:
Camarón
Everything has been said. He was the one who did the most for flamenco in this century and in the next. He was flamenco and he was the leading edge of flamenco. Flamenco means Camaron.
Niña Pastori
A new kid who sings very well, is very amusing and who made a really nice record.
Enrique Morente
Someone who earned everything he has. There is a lot left for us to learn from him.
Joaquín Cortés
He's a guy who’s suddenly very big. He does very well with his own style and with a personality that has a profound impact on people.
Gipsy Kings
I don't listen to them much, but I think they are good.
Rayito
A child who, for his age, possesses a lot of technique. He could go a long way if he makes up his mind to.
