Arcángel.
Peña Niño Arahal.

Change
of plans: Instead of seeing the world-famous dancing star in a stadium, we listened
to a young singer with no recording in a small club.
SHIVERS
OF YOUTH
From the dark motives
behind the cancellation of Joaquín Cortés’ "Soul" in the
Olympic Stadium, to the crystalline voice of a young singer from Huelva that fascinated
listeners at the last Bienal, illuminating a dozen shows. So far this month,
Arcángel has only participated—conspicuously—following ‘Inventario’ and
Eva la Yerbabuena, as well as uplifting the winner of the dance contest.
He came onto the
small stage opening with tonás de entonación, and, in the
fragile malagueña, he "remembered" Chacón:
the caramel of the trembling custard, before going into verdiales. Paco
Jarana, Eva’s husband and composer, set him up with beautiful introductions por
alegrías (quivering crystal), and por soleares (with pergolas):
his command in the high register, and how he used them to cover the palette. Adaptability.
He concluded por seguiriyas summoning the noble Manuel Cagancho and Paco
la Luz; por tangos he went beyond the influence of Enrique; and, in the
fandangos, the wonder of his pitch control was fully embodied: "I
have a duty to the area where I was born," he said, before superbly singing
a dozen styles, leaving Alosno for last.
At 22 years of
age, Francisco José Arcángel has one of the brightest singing careers,
illuminated by Morente, a clear path ahead, a promising future, and great sensitivity.
A recording is in the works for next year.
