May
3rd, 2000. Carmen Cortes.
Teatro Villamarta.
"Alegrias"
of different flamenco races
Carmen
Cortes presented the show "Racial" with the aid of three guest bailaores
(flamenco dancers). Guitar and cante sessions completed the program of the day.

You
take three guest bailaores, you leave Cortes with her well-known flexibility and
she presents the premiere of her show, joyfully: after the first half-hour, Juan
Ramirez had already danced the third "alegrias" of the night. The first bailaor
invited to come up on stage after the group of five bailaoras was Rafael del Carmen,
with a greater mobility on stage, while Carmen Cortes herself took on the intense
"soleares por bulerias" - sung by the young Maria Carmona - and shared with Juan
Dominguez.

Listening
to how they intertwined the "solea" you could tell that the composer of the piece
was the guitar player, Gerardo Nuñez, partner of the bailaora, who left
the actual playing of the piece in the hands of Vicente Cortes and Jose Luis Monton
(also a composer, with two albums to his credit). That open "solea" performed
by Juan Jose Amador was the most brilliant moment, applying a bit of color to
the background in good harmony with the dancing movements, and with an epilogue
in the cante of the post-Camaronist Jose Mendez.

And
then came the "terminator" Ramirez, with his hands tied, in his long and popular
solo of percussion "por bulerias"; at times his rhythmic footwork gave us moments
of great musicality. The cantaores (flamenco singers) slowly rose "por fandangos",
and the whole company grouped in a circle danced "por bulerias". Truly "Racial":
after an hour of fiesta the matter was resolved, with the public's acclaim of
the "pataitas" (rapid stamping of the feet) of the cantaores and guitar players.
Yes, even Monton danced.
